Point 1. of eight.
1. The front-man. Not been addressed properly since Jordan Rhodes left. In surviving with the lowest number of goals ever scored in the Prem we should have made a striker (or two) the top priority.
If you do not score you can get a maximum 38 points. The reality is you opponents will score in at least 65% of matches and you will end the season with 11 or 12 points.
If you average a goal a game you have a 50% survival chance....these are simplistic scenarios but the conclusion is obvious.
We have spent £45 million this season...it should have been firstly on a striker.

The goal diffference stats pretty much confirm we conceed shit loads of goals. Also as I've stated before, you could put any World Class striker up front for us and we still would not score. Massive gaps between midfield and attack. Defence more often than not has more holes than a porcupines condom. |

Harry Kane wouldn’t get double figures playing for us.
Personally don’t think that chunking money on goal scorers is the answer.

There is another thread knocking about that reckons we spent considerably less than that - as per all transfers are undisclosed so figures quoted could be skewed massively by the tabloids/media. With a little more composure/luck we could definitely had a few more goals this season but theres no doubt its going to be a titanic struggle to get enough points to avoid relagation this season. Watched the Bournemouth/Palace game last night and the pace at which Bournemouth play was brilliant - and they still have a couple of players in defence who have made the journey from the lower leagues. Eddie Howe is a smarmy bleeder but when they are on form they are a good team to watch (they were bang in form when we played them at home last season so all is not lost with something like 13 points from 15).

He can just force his way past....scores plenty without service. Remarkable that everyone is talking about the Salah drought...he still has more this season than our entire squad! I have already said on here (twice) that Mounie and Depoitre will not get 30 more top class goals between them in their entire careers....Kane gets that every season. |

How much would this establised £45m striker fancy earning per week? £100k+, £150k? How would we persuade this striker to come, with the promise of pinpoint crosses from VLP? Incisive passing from the number 10 position, that we don't occupy 9 games out of 10?
All well and good saying what we should do, but it's worthless noise considering what we can actually do.

Has anyone asked if the Premier League is literally a step too far for a club like ours? |

I don't think any of our fans think we should have spent £45 million on a striker plus wages but given our scoring record we should at least have taken a punt on a cheaper option up front like we did with the wide positions. It might not have worked out but being content to start the new season with just two smiliar type strikers was a much bigger gamble.
That said we might have missed the target we were after and decided to wait for the right man in January. Hopefully that's the case anyway

"They could win 100 straight and I'd still try to find fault"  Are you really going to try to spin the wins against bottom half teams again - you did this in the Championship for our first 4 seasons as reasons we will get relegated until - you know - we got promoted instead. 3 points is 3 points regardless the standard of opposition. |

Agreed Andy, in terms of Premier League season vs season, I think it has and is going wrong. Overall as a Club though, there is nothing whatsoever wrong. We stay up, great, we go down. We do so to play at a level most of us thought we would not exceed and with a trouser full of cash and multi-million pound squad. Oh and if the worst happens, the parachute payments we have seen other Clubs benefit from season after season after season as we scrimped having to buy (and pay) such as Walsall's star Midfielder. That would be us this time. Still time though to save our Premier League status. We do though have to start to pick some 3 pointers up. And soon. We are in very good shape as a Club. The best in my 40 plus years following. The best for probably most if not all that post on here. |

Assumed would be if some Oligarch or Prince bought us. So long as we stay stable as a club and invest it’s all good. Saying that, we need to spend a bit on the squad to even compete! |

Assumed would be if some Oligarch or Prince bought us. So long as we stay stable as a club and invest it’s all good. Saying that, we need to spend a bit on the squad to even compete! I would hope that if we can 'stay up' that we would be able to attract more investment. Everything is baby steps at the moment. That does not mean things are not improving, just that we assume they are not as we don't see what is really going on behind the scenes so to speak. If some rich oil sheikh came in that would be nice, but would it be at the cost of the soul of the club? |

I can’t quite believe a bloke who ( allegedly) spent his formative years watching Town in the old 4th division can title a thread “where did it all go wrong “ . I can understand the frustration from the FIFA manager wannabes , and the plastics who’s Town watching career began at Wembley . But from a 70s Cowshed boy ? Surely not . Mounié and Depoitre are both better than Jordan Rhodes, by a bloody mile (and I'm a huge fan of Jordan Rhodes).
It went a bit wrong when DW forgot that he had Pritchard in the squad.
