A caveat, much of what I write here is hearsay, but generally hearsay from good sources. It is largely interspersed with known facts, speculation and my own assessments. Firstly, recruitment on and off the field post promotion was terribly poor. Town should have brought in better people who had been there and done it. A backroom team to match our new, bigger rivals. It appears Rebbe alone was far from responsible for all the recruitment and it was a collective failure behind the scenes. The loss of Webber proved a negative. Mounie and De Poitre quickly showed they were nowhere near Premiership class and I believe their recruitment was more to do with flawed aerial statistics and lower financial cost rather than a case of genuine talent-spotting. Woeful at the top level. In surviving we took our eye from the ball, it was a freak season and 28 goals should have rung huge alarm bells. Recruitment before this season was haphazard and scatter-gun and although a striker was the priority we got 8 or 9 virtually unproven players. Too many new and pointless (literally) faces. Wagner returned late for the new season, the old heads that had steadied the dressing room (Hudson, Whitehead and Cranie) were gone. Preparations were not adequate. The new signings started to create cliques based on national/cultural/linguistic lines. I suspect the new guys did not fit in with the squad who had helped us survive and had less connection to the “Terrier Spirit” of the previous two seasons. “Who are all these newbies who want my earned place in the team?” must have been the thoughts of those who had done the spadework. Wagner had clearly lost the dressing room. Results went badly, shoulders slumped. The retreat became a rout. Wagner had become the Tinkerman, gone the high press…..new tactics based mostly on the opposition rather than our own strengths. Luck deserted us as well but after 2 seasons with huge slices of it already devoured we could not complain. All this was compounded by the man at the helm falling seriously ill and being not only absent but unable to get involved. A strong hand was needed at the tiller, it was now a rudderless boat threatening to run aground. Wagner was politely asked to step aside….it was not working. The club has been on the market for quite sometime. Dean has said that he would step aside anytime that a strong and acceptable bid (with the clubs best interests at heart) came along. The urgency of pushing it through and finding a buyer became more critical once Deano fell seriously ill. There were several interested parties, at least two overseas consortia (possibly three). American and Arabian were mentioned. The preferred bid has taken the day. Phil is a Town fan, well known to Deano and I am led to believe he has a serious financial British backer who is part of the team. In retaining 25% Dean has sent a message that he intends to prevent failures and asset-stripping….the club must come before profit. It was a smart move and I suspect done to get the deal over the line when the bid could not match the complete asking price. Although I do not know the final agreed sale price I believe the ask was £80 million with Dean Hoyle prepared to accept around £60 million. As to the future? Well, were have a robust club with good finances and plenty to look forward to. Now we are known globally, our profile has gone through the roof and to cap it all we have the best fans in the world…bar none. You should all be very proud. Those who think we are going to sign a whole plethora of new players for next season are very much mistaken. Recruitment will be light. A year of consolidation is likely. Some players are already sold and quite a few will be moved on. The attitude and behaviour of a nameless few is not what is wanted at our club….they will all be gone. Dean Hoyle is on the mend, that is fantastic news and a Godsend for our club as he is needed now more than ever. Finally, a huge thank you to Dean and his family, not to mention all the hardworking, good people at the club. On we go…UTT

Most of that Oti is stating the bleeding obvious. The DOF bit is the bit I don't get. Either we need one or we don't. We needed one when wilson was here. Quickly replaced him with Webber cos we needed him. Then we didn't really need one till we got the guy from Celtic in. Who lasted two minutes and then we didn't need one till we got Rebbe. Now we don't need one but we will need one after this window (possibly the most important window in our history) .. I'm lost

Although the poster I'm defending took the piss out of me once for doing the same thing. It's good site content and even if some of it is obvious it is good to read a simple narrative account of the season's failings condensed into one (albeit unperturbed by grammatical convention:p) post.

Seems strange to say the next window is so important that we are not getting one in but we will after. Surely any incoming person will come with an already full contacts list and scouting dossier. It defies logic.

We can't expect a plethora of new players but many will be moving on? Are we going into the season with a squad of 15 players then? Imagine they'll be ten new faces minimum.

It defies logic. The logic is simple. A DOF influencing immediate signings would only be any good if the club planned to make immediate signings. They do not. The DOF is for the future....not some knee-jerk who will want to sign another half dozen no-marks who have not been checked out. You do realise the new season starts in 12 weeks?

I think they know which players they want and don't want someone coming in and confusing matters. Do we need one or don't we ? That's all I ask If we do need one, we seem to be taking our time appointing one. Seiwert said in his interview in motd that he would be busy during the summer so I assume from that and the lack of DOF that he'll be signing the players himself. Call me old fashioned but surely if you have a style of play in mind and you know what type of player you want and you're carrying the can for results then it's only right the manager signs the players. And before you ask, I'm not in the Jan out camp.

To some on here it’s more important to point out errors in grammar and spelling than to comment on the post which in most cases are legible. Some like me probably post on a mobile whilst doing other things which sometimes causes the odd mistake. Takes all sorts.

Good read Oti but you didn't mention the high level of competition next season. It is going to be bloody tough. I expect good campaigns from Forest, Wednesday, Stoke and Bristol City. The promoted teams will, more than likely, start with a bounce and the three play off losers could contend again. I also think Fulham and Cardiff will take some beating. Mid table will be more than acceptable next term.
