How many on DATM were there that day, 5,000 ?? Me and Coddington went by train for the day and caused quite a stir being the only ones with clappers, Otium managed a seat next to his Majesty in the Royal Box having flown in via Zeppelin ballon, so that's at least three of us.

Am sure the experienced Cod is fine and just had enough of reading about the impending doom.

I know by arguing with you it's akin to saying you should like tea rather than coffee but surely Bob Stokoe and Sunderland trumps Keith Houchen and Coventry ? I've posted before on previous threads the FA Cup was such a big deal in its day, be that a first round tie at home to Mansfield - anyone remember the Carl Douglas aka Kung Fu Fighting Stags fan in the open end, complete with white martial arts suit and bare feet ? to a raft of memorable ties, semi finals and finals - 3rd tier Wendies having 3 replays with Arsenal, Man U with 3/4 of Hillsborough beating Leeds, Supermacs threat to destroy Liverpool failing badly, etc etc. The huge increase in live games coupled with Man U's withdrawal in 2000 when our very own Bruce pissed off from a promotion campaign to commentate from the beach all combined to kill it off, the semis being played at Wembley finished it off for me.

Those multiple replays, particularly Weds v Arsenal, were enthralling even if you didn’t support either team. I’ve just noticed that BBC are showing some old FA Cup game’s tomorrow and Sunday so that will be worth a watch.

By strange coincidence in the early hours there was a radio feature on the Sheff Weds v Arsenal 3rd round FA Cup marathon which I mentioned earlier in this thread - I was slightly out saying it went to 3 replays, in fact there were 4 replays, 5 games played, 3 with extra time, enough time on the pitch for a PL to lift the Cup nowadays.
Wednesday had dropped into the 3rd tier and had a temporary manager, Jack Charlton who was on a £400 per game contract, so presumably he was happy to keep drawing, the first match at Hillsborough was one of only a handful to start due to the snow, a 100 or so fans got free admission for helping clear the pitch, Arsenal didn't want to play on the ice and when the second half was delayed due to Pat Jennings being bombarded with snowballs they felt more annoyed at having to.
The first ended 1-1 and the following Tuesday it was replayed at Highbury, again 1-1 this time after extra time. All 5 games were played within the space of 16 days and Arsenal broke their transfer record after the 2nd game by paying £450k for Brian Talbot, he starred against them for Ipswich in the previous year but was Cup tied for this. The 3rd, 4th and 5th games were all played at a neutral venue, Leicester City's Filbert Street, but the crowds still came, over 120,000 in total - totally bizarre when you think last month Hillsborough was half empty for the visit of Man.City.
After a 2-2 and a 3-3 finally Arsenal came through by 2-nil and they went on to face Man U in a classic final, 2-nil up with 5 minutes left, Gordon McQueen and Sammy Macilroy equalised only for Alan Sunderland to win it - the following year Ricky Villa won it for Spurs giving rise to the "trick" pub quiz question.
One last oddity, to get to round 3 Wednesday beat Scunthorpe and Tranmere both games were drawn and had to be replayed, has any other team played 9 FA Cup ties and not won the Cup ?

Oxford City and Alvechurch played 6 games for a total of 660 minutes. Alvechurch won the final game 1–0 to progress to the first round proper. 1972/73 - Bideford played 13 games over 5 rounds

Thanks for posting that. Great memories, I remember some of these games as they were televised. That Alan Sunderland goal was one of the most dramatic cup final moments.

Good shout. How refreshing to see footballers just getting on with it. A little bit of a moan but just accepting it. That tackle from the Coventry lad would see a 10 game ban nowadays... Refreshing to see this, so hopefully, as someone suggested, we might get to see some old MOTD shows during this next few weeks. Gary Mabbutt was also a solid pro, doing that with type 1 diabetes. Just got this snippet from his wiki page. Eat your heart out Oti... In 2018, Mabbutt had part of his foot eaten by a rat. While on holiday with his daughter in the Kruger National Park, in South Africa, Mabbutt, who has little feeling in his feet, awoke to find a rat had eaten part of his foot and had bitten one toe to the bone. He was forced to fly back to the UK for surgery and spent a week in hospital.

Really brilliant how the BBC have been so quick to put some classic MOTD’ s onto their schedule for the millions of football fans. Not much to ask surely.

Maybe it's being planned, maybe some copyright issues (not that you'd have thought that), but might not be as easy as it sounds. I'm sure that it won't be long before they realise that recycling the more recent pundit style shows isn't cutting the mustard. Watched a few mins the other day, with some ex pro's creating their best XI of the PL, yrs 2000 - 2010 or something. At the time it might have been OK, it would have fitted in around proper highlights shows, but with a total lack of that now, it just seemed to highlight what a load of shite it actually was...

Yes it was sarcasm. I would have thought that the ITV archives would have had lots to offer also. Whilst Sky Sports and Sky in particular has it’s critics, at least they are trying to fill the void with some great highlights- but they of course can’t go back as far as BBC and ITV.
