Yesterday's defeat was especially hard to take when our record on 26 December is taken into account. I believe, from a quick flick through, that, since (and including) 1967-68, we have won 16, drawn 9 and lost only 8 on that particular day. I haven't counted those games on Monday 27th where there wasn't a match on Sunday 26th. Four of those 8 defeats have been at home and only four away. The two previous defeats away on Boxing Day have coincided with our winning promotion (1-0 at Hull in 1994-95 and 2-1 at Halifax in 1979-80), but the one before at Chesterfield in 1974-75, we went down. This last match most closely resembles yesterday's, although far from winning the three previous away games, we had lost 4 in a row before the trip to Saltergate. I didn't count them, but I believe that we have had a lot more home matches than away, just like we usually seem to be at home on Grand National day.
