Scunthorpe player clearly headed ball back and I would say the Assessor will count that decision as a mistake and mark the Asst down. If the ball had deflected off the defender's head the offside would still stand but in the current climate it is more likely a goal be given. Anyone remember Bristol Rovers losing a goal luike that v West Brom in Cup last season - it was similar and the goal was awarded. It's a grey area. As you say remember Pav Abbot scoring one like when it deflected off a defender's head, Liner gave it but was overruled by the Ref. Which ever way you look at it it's a grey area and needs clearing up.

Cadders was coming back from being off-side and it doesn't matter if the ball comes off a scunny player if he is off-side when he ball is played to him. I think your wrong. Remember Abbott's goal a few years ago against Lincoln? It's excactly the same situation. The ball came off an opponent, thus making Cadermateri onside Look it up on the FIFA website (Laws of the game page 99). If the referee thinks he was "gaining an advantage" by being in an offside position, even if the ball rebounds to him off an opponent, then the referee can penalise him. That seems to imply an accidental touch by the opponent, if he deliberately PLAYS the ball back (because he did not see the player offside) then it could be different. It is a judgment call which the referee has to make in a split second. Interestingly the "nearer to the opponents' goal line" means any part of his head, body or feet, but NOT his arms.

The referee against Bristol Rovers was excellent.

I thought the one against Hereford was decent.
That's two half decent refs out of 12 home games this season, but we're just an irrelevant league below the Premiership.
