Just seen his name mentioned on the best town player thread (in the worst player list, obviously ! ha) It stirred memories of the general derision and despair the crowd felt when he played at Leeds Road. I had to have a look on wikipedia and it turns out he went to donny for a season and then to Northampton, wonder what they thought of him ? He's now a financial advicer, could the credit crunch be his fault ?!

Mick Buxton's worst ever signing, bar perhaps Kevin Stonehouse. I do remember he could stick ball in the net the problem was he never got into enough positions to do so. His best game was away at Blackpool 1981 when he scored twice....

Blimey! Austin might have been useless for Town but to blame a major global economic slump on the man is slightly harsh don't you think?!

My dad mentioned him last night and said people used to call him the billionaire or someway along them lines as he was often compared to steve austin? Not sure anyways but he said he was tosh and should have stayed down south.

Wouldn't have said he was a truly bad/dire player, but you also have to remember he was bought not long after we'd had a prolific goal tally with messrs Robins, Fletcher, Brown, Stanton etc...
And even Cowling got some stick, but TBH I don't think I've seen a better crosser of the ball since, unfortunately he was slower than me...

I thought the Town fans were very harsh on TA. He started off quite well and scored far more goals than Iwan Roberts in in their respective first 6 months. The trouble is we all loved Peter Fletcher and started getting on TA's back. Despite Mick Buxton asking Town fans to stop getting at TA the Town fans eventually broke his confidence. It still goes on to this day.

I’m with berty on this one; Austin got blamed for us not getting promotion in 81. Not as bad as he’s been painted.

He had the same problem Jevons has now. Payed a lot of money for him but didn't score enough and wasn't the sort to make up for it by getting stuck in and battling for the team. At least when Iwan wasn't scoring early doors, he put the muscle work in so bought himself some time to get it right before the fans got on his back. If Jevons played like he would win a 50-50 with one of the half time cheerleaders , the fans would be more supportive of him.

Austin IMO was a truly dire player, admitted Cowling was a good crosser of the ball and had the occasional good game, but the thing these 2 players had in common was they both had hearts as big as peas.

Think it was the first time Mick Buxton spent serious money on a player and he turned out to be a dud. Ironic, really, because Mick found some real gems in his time for absolute peanuts.

I saw Austin make his debut away at Walsall - he scored twice in a 2-2 draw. That game at Blckpool was superb when we came from behind to win with thousands of town fans behind the goal and on the side terrace.
I also remember a night match away at Donny and he was playing fort them and getting some stick.

Dont know if Im putting the wrong take on this, sorry if I am, but Dave Cowling had a heart the size of any player I have ever seen at Town and on a par with Boothys. The stick he used to take (in my opinion very unfairly) bordered on the insane, yet he still gave his all. Perhaps after his bad injury he did show a bit of fear at times, but for me over my 40+ years of watching Town he was, is and always will be one of my top three Town heroes!!!!!!!!!!!

I remember Austin too and agree that he compares with Jevons! ( will he ever score ? )
I remember Cowling too and in my opinion he was a better crosser of the ball than Roberts - though Robbo is a better all round player !!

Cowling used to get stick cos he was a bit lightweight in the tackle in an era where tackling was still very much part of the game. Town fans have always loved a tackler and will overlook any amount of other defficiencies so long as the player 'gets stuck in'. Kev Gray, Darren Bullock etc But Cowling was the best crosser of the ball Ive seen in a town shirt and when he didn't put it over, those little over lapping runs Mally Brown used to do were magic where Cowling would draw the full back in just to roll it into brown's path as he steamed past on the outside. He could put a ball in too. Seemed to get us a goal every other game or is that my memory exaggerating it? ;D

Cowling and Brown on the same wing would never happen; Robinson or Burke would be the full-back. At Cardiff I did, however, see what was probably the most unique goal in Town’s history: Cowling right foot volley from Brown left foot cross.

Terry Austin WOW never thought I'd read a thread on this bloke.
He got all the stick he deserved when he turned around after being subbed and gave a double V sign to the cowshed.
Crap hair do and should of been charged for being an OXYGEN thief.
worst bloke to wear the blue&white stripes EVER !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

It is true about Terry Austin being an IFA. I can confirm this as I invigilated his IFA exam to become an IFA at DBS in 2001. I think his practice was based in Mansfield.
