I've read the rumours further down the board but as LC was very confident at the HW meeting that Smitihies would sign a new contract within days can we assume something has happened??
Anybody in the know??
One thing does strike me that if his head has been turned by a PL club then LC wouldn't still be playing him.
Plus it looks like Werling and Craddock in this week?? (i'm just guessing at Craddock by the way ;D )

There is a big difference between being after someone and simply monitoring someones progress.
I honestly cannot believe that any Premiership team is willing to take a punt on him at this stage of his development.

I think Alex will sign the new deal but there is probably a lot of negotiating to be done yet.
He is a quality keeper with bags of potential but he needs to be playing and a move to a premier club reserve side or under age side would not be right for him now.
His stock is rising so his wages will need to be increased, it will no doubt be a complicated deal based on basic wage, appearance fees etc plus wage increases after appearnces international honours etc. he will also want to know if clark intends to let him prove himself as number one or if a keeper is high on clarks wishlist. He will also want assurances about the future in terms of clubs coming in for him it be a fee release clause or an agreement that if a premier club comes in he has the option to speak to them.
Before the end of this window he will commit his future to the club

I dont think a prem outfit will risk over a million to sign a lad who has just got into our first team...... if the offer was 2 mill or above we couldnt turn it down really !

we can at least point out to smithies that historically, when a premiership club has come in for our younger players, we haven't stood in their way. ie Stead, Booth. I think he would be better off staying with us though. He's done half the job by forcing his way into the first team, now he just needs a few seasons under his belt and he could command a good fee and salary. How long would it take him to force his way into a premiership side?? Could easily be benched for 5-6 years if he was to move now.

Alex seems pretty smart so I think he would rather be number 1 at a local club (the club he supports?) who have shown faith in him to make him number 1, rather than be number 2, 3, 4 goalkeeper at a Premier club.
I think he probably will be thinking about it though, if I were in his shoes and offers came in, I'd wait to hear every possibility before making a decision.
To be honest, I'd have offered him a contract before we got to January (not really possible for Clark as he only came in December!)

Forget about the money, now we're into Jan and he's out of contract in the summer he can talk to whoever he wants with the fee being decided by tribunal. IMO someone has dropped a major clanger by not having Smithies and Broadbent tied up til at least the end of next season.

I wanna see him clock up at least 50-60 games for Town before we start thinking about accepting offers for him.
Bump his price up a lot and also we benefit from having him here until at least then.

Are any teams going to offer a load now when they can have him for nowt in the summer, especially as he probably wouldn't be going into the 1st team?
I know we'd get something from tribunal but it wouldn't be anything like his market value.

With him only being 18 and having such good potential, I'm pretty sure we'd receive a decent amount for him.

Smithies, at his age, with his England experience is hot property and to not have him tied up for at least two years is scandalous.

Kieran O'Regan mentioned that Chris Woods, Everton's goalkeeping coach, was in VIP area on Saturday.

Most of the reports I read in yesterday's papers claimed the scouts were there to see Simon Cox. Surely that's wrong? He didn't seem anywhere near Premiership quality on Saturday despite his cracking goal!

I thought it was just compensation for the cost of developing him etc. I might be wrong though, as it has been known.

We don't have a lot of say about accepting offers for him given his contract situation. As a player for the future teams will be happy to wait until the summer and pick him up for a limited tribunal price. Those teams can talk to him now and town can't stop them. Having said that we'll get a lot more for him now he has some first team games to his name than we would was he still in the reserves.

No I know, I mean I would have offered him a contract at the start of this season/end of last so we could have a say in whether teams can talk to him or not. Then I'd want him to play those games before we decided to start accepting offers. We don't live in an ideal world though, sadly.
