...When I was a little kid my dad got me a small ball, not a football, and I'd kick it around and when he came home from work I'd say "Town ball dad!" He took me to watch a game in 1948 and I was hooked. I'd go down with my mates, or alone if they couldn't go, and walk down Edgerton, Blacker Road down Willow Lane and either along Leeds Road or the canal bank to the home of The Town. I didn't care if I got wet going to the ground but if we lost I hated getting wet going home! I had a boys season ticket during the 3 years back in the first division in the mid fifties. I took up refereeing in 1964 and didn't get to many games after that. I emigrated to Canada in late 1969 and apart from a one year return in 1971-72 I've lived here ever since. Before computers I'd listen to the football scores on a short radio and eagerly wait for the English papers the following week. Not much about Town because they were crappy London editions. Then when the internet became readily available I could at least get more current information and when Town started broadcasting games over the 'net life took on a whole new meaning. Now I get up at 6.45am on Saturday to listen in (and 3.45am when the cops make us play at noon against L**ds!!). I like evening games because I can listen at lunch time. I never miss a game unless I'm on holiday or ill, I always keep up to date on matters football on the BBC site and, of course, I visit DATM every day. My wife thinks I'm mad, but I've been a Town fan for nearly 62 years and I cannot stop being a Town fan. I have an official Town and I still have a blue and white striped one my mum knitted for me about 55 years ago! I think the video clips on the HTAFC are great. All the players were born after I left England but I feel I know most of them from these clips. Oggy and Kieran make my weekends and I'm sick as a dog when we lose and over the moon when we win. I can't imagine that ever changing. UTT!! TTID!!!

Yeah David, on that note, another thing I love about this site, and Geoff's predecessor was how it fills in some of the gaps that I missed. Although I went back and always watched games, there was a time (the late seventies and eighties) before the internet where the only news I got was from clippings that my Mum cut out of the newspapers and sent me every now and again.
For example, I never even knew that Sam Allardyce played for Town. Like being in a coma for years, eh? That's pretty sad, eh? But you have to be "sad" to be a Town fan - it wouldn't be half as much fun otherwise ;D

Great sentiments well expressed - also put a smile on my face. Obviously, as our friend Phil writes, you must be pretty sad, or mad - like the rest of us! We have to have been mad to watch some of the rubbish that's been our staple fare over the last few years. But - for the first time in about eight years, since the Bruce era - things are most definitely looking up. Good performance Satdy, pity about the goal we conceded towards the end but listening to our Manager talking about "using a little mallet" to instruct the players on the art of defending a lead, I think we can expect to see an improvement in that area!! UTT

Off to work now, David... and your post has set me off with a smile on my face. Thank you! Here's to Town lads and lasses everywhere! Don't envy you travelling on the M62 and back to work. I did that trip for my work over a number of years (obviously not to such a glamerous employer like yours) and always hated the bumper to bumper crawling along, even worst if there had been a bump. Is Death Valley still as mentally slow these days? Great post by David as well

But, yes... it's a nightmare, especially if you catch the morning and evening rush hours. And, like you say, there are always accidents, so it's pot luck whenever you travel. But, hey... I get to come home to Yorkshire. Think of the poor sods who have to travel home the other way!

I did it for a year & it always seemed to be bright sunshine until you got over the hill & it would be dark, miserable & raining. Fortunately I transferred back to West Yorkshire!

Great post. You would've loved it on Saturday. Best atmosphere for ages and ages, hope it came across via Oggy and Keiran. May the diaspora of HTAFC prosper the world over!
