Today I visited BBC's 606 messageboards. I don't usually read the 606 boards as I think about 90% of what is written on there is a shower of sheeeeeeeee-ite Today though, I looked on them for some reason. It's probably true that he has signed a new 4 year contract. I cannot see him turning down a Premiership wage at a league 1 club...

Making him the highest paid player would be what, 6-7k a week? As much as I rate him if thats what it takes to keep him i'd tell him to get stuffed. We could get a decent goalie for this level for half that, or even a season long loan.

Why a relegation release clause though? I think the chances of us going down this season or next are very slim. It seems pointless it being in the deal. What do I know though?  |

We could get a decent goalie for this level for half that, or even a season long loan. But we could get a good fee for him in a years time or however long it is if he signs a contract now. And not (more than likely) get a pittance for him at tribunal. |

Well, as someone stated on that BB thread, this would simply ensure that we get a fair transfer fee if he is tempted elsewhere. We wouldn't stop him going to the premiership, I would hope, and he is well paid on the meantime. Plus we get to keep a great keeper. Everyone under the sun is happy ... ish.

6k will equal 300k a year roughly.
He plays 2 years with us and progresses like he should, plus we maybe in the championship: we could get 4-5 million for him (Simonsen went for 3 million).
So anything above 750k would result in a profit after 2 years really. And he's worth that now!

I cant imagine some of our better players being very happy with an 18 year old goalie whos played 15 games getting up to twice as much money as them. And it may also affect his attitude too. |

The relegation release clause would likely apply if we came down from The Championship the season after we got promoted, and so it would probably be less than his actual release clause.
Just a precaution, but to be fair, how would anyone have got this information?
And also i'd agree with making him our highest paid player to get him to stay. As rjs says, the fee we may get in a few years time could make it all worthwhile.

If it was a relegation clause would it not be say for example we went up to the championship then came straight back down rather than the prospect of us being relegated from league 1?

And i'm not saying he doesn't deserve that interest, cos I really do rate him. I'd just prefer him to be staying for the right reasons, not because we are willing to chuck a load of money his way. We've already offered him what he 'wanted' remember. And with regards to Rooney, he wont have been the highest earner at the club though, and 6k a week is a lot more than 80k a year, and we dont have Evertons budget. |

Reckon this is true. Good deal all round if we eventually sell for a massive profit.....the only negative is what has been mentioned before about 'team harmony'......lets just hope the rest are mature enough to get on with it and expect better contracts themselves when they WORK HARD and help us up to the Premiership!!
Afterall, my boss earns 40k more than me but I don't hold it against him............he has to perform big time for it!
And that's the pressure of it all......the higher you go......the higher you fall. Let's hope Smithies keeps his climbing boots on!

Sorry, I meant 80k a WEEK not a year (God knows why I typed year ) Still though, he might not have been the highest, but I bet he was in the top 5, and on a lot more than seasoned pros who have been at Utd a lot longer than him. Clubs have to pay the best players the best money. It doesn't matter that they are young, just that they are the best. Our best players at the moment aint the young lads that attracted this "intrest" before. All the players we have bought are above them in ability wise. These so called "best" players will have negotiated a contract they are happy with, just because another player suddenly gets more they shouldn't moan. Yes we offered Smithies what he wanted, but look at Liverpool with Gerrard, Man United with Ronaldo, Chelsea with Lampard. All "best" players in the squad, and all took ages to sign a new deal, no difference here IMO. I'm not saying I like it, but we've got to accept that these days the players have the power, and in order to keep hold of the better players we have to pay them a resonable wage. |

I don't understand why there is a relegation clause? Surely if we went down it would have something to do with AS letting shedloads of goals in, in which case most of the top clubs would possibly steer clear. Or is it to safeguard against that I'm confused! |

 about two weeks ago I was told that Smithies had more or less agreed to go to Tottenham ! This was very reliable information, dont know if it still is the case ? I really hope he is going to sign this 4 yr deal for us now !

Be a good do if we can keep him for that amount of time or even half. By then he'll only have got better (kicking hopefully ;D ) and would be commanding a bigger transfer fee. |
