Hello everyone, I am currently studying Graphic Design in my third year and I am writing my dissertation on the topic of Branding and Identity in football.
I have always regarded Town as a proper, true football club and never as a 'brand' like a lot of the big teams in the world have established themselves have now. But I think in the future lots of football teams will become more of a brand as opposed to a team that fans can identify with.
I would like to ask everyone what their thoughts are on how the identity of football clubs have changed over time and what you think is good or bad about the transformation of football from it being a spectator sport to a corporate 'business' so to speak? What do you think are the main factors that make up the identity and brand of a football club? Your feedback will be much appreciated.
Cheers Tom
UTT!

1500 words ok for you? Football at league level has always been, and will always be, about business. I think the corporate nature of the game is pretty much in line with how business has itself changed over the years. Good luck with your work - get it uploaded and a link when you have done..........!

I have a season ticket and run a branding/marketing agency. If you are in Huddersfield, drop me a message if you want to meet up for an hour and we could have chat about it more. Graham.

I think Sean J/smj1 would be quite upset if Town aren't seen as a brand as well as a club!
Send him a PM and ask him some questions too, I reckon.

What do you think are the main factors that make up the identity and brand of a football club? Badge, colours, stadium/ facilities (think sh*t hole of a ground and you automatically think the club in general is poor), reputation of fans (certain clubs are brought down reputation wise because of the behaviour of fans, e.g. Millwall), chants/ songs (think ‘Never walk alone’ and you automatically think Liverpool/ Celtic), history/ success/ failures, mascots, associations with other businesses/ organisations (McAlpine, Galpharm). Leaving it a bit late to be starting your dissertation aren't you; mine took about 8 months! Good luck.

As an aside you may want to look into whole new brand that Town brought out during the Ruberry era Ruberry www.huddersfield1.co.uk/images/gifs/htfcnewcrest.gifCurrent www.thisisthebarmyarmy.co.uk/htafc_badges_huddersfield_town_crest_2007_2008_medium2.jpgI think part of the rationale of changing to a new was to do with copy writing, i.e. it would be easier to introduce a new badge and copywrite that creative than try and establish ownership over the older (owned by the community ). I'm probably not explaining that too well but I'm sure one of the more legally minded posters could flesh out the whole the copywriting issue. The Ruberry era would be a good one to look, especially the work we did trying to raise our profile in the Asian market (Zico) and also I think BR had high hopes for the internet and was a key player in the Premium tv web group that provides most Football League clubs with there official websites. The last 12 months have also been interesting from a brand building (marketing) point of view with the club doing loads more above the line advertising than normal (billboards, free stickers in car, posters, radio even tv!) as well as below the line advertising (direct mail) SJ has also tried to create brands and slogans in the past that engender a sense of "community" ... e.g. the strapline "Your Town, Your Club, Your Seat" For me Town is community focused and that's the core of our brand. Considering we've not been top flilght for nearly 40 it amazes me the loyalty the Town and surrounding area shows to our club. Huddersfield Town is and always will be the number one club in Huddersfield. Other Town's have more Manchester United fans etc than support the local team, e.g Macclesfield is a decent sized place yet only get gates of say 2000!

Thanks for the feedback! I will be back in Huddersfield at Easter time so could maybe meet up with you then? I'm also going to Stockport at the weekend if you are going we could maybe meet up somewhere and have a chat? My dissertation isn't as big a project as then ones people have to do on other peoples courses (4000 words) and Iv been working on it since the start of the year. Didn't originally start off on this topic but has evolved into football as a brand in itself.

I am playing in the morning in the Netterriers game v Stockport (though with a squad of 20 I will be doing a fair amount of benchwarming).
As for the game in the afternoon, i'll be guided to a pub and given my ticket 15 minutes before I get to the ground.
'PM' me (I don't really know what this means but people seem to use it a lot when they wantg to get in contact off-board) and we can get together at Easter.
