Seeing as we seem a bit light on the striker front, we have to play one up with Pilks and Roberts wide but supporting him closely but dropping back when required. 3 Midfielders Goodwin deepish and Collins holding and battling with Flynn up behind the striker. Back 4 solid and good cover for full backs when needed.
Man Utd seem to play like this and should be copied - it sounds stupidly simple to say that but surely whatever the best teams do should be copied? Also Peterborough use a similar style - Fergie style hmmmmm? You could play a winger up with the striker like Cads or Roberts but a midfielder can tackle and fill in behind as well as score - Flynn is perfect for that. It's funny how when we have played a more conservative style like this under GM and when Clark has used it we have done well.
Watching the good teams this year they seem to outnumber and out battle us down the middle and this needs to be addressed with 4 3 3 for next season. Add a young Boothesque player (Novak?) between Roberts/Ainsworth(with some guts) and Pilks and we'll do well.

Ternent tried it and failed, miserably. Would be difficult to make the system work if the man up top doesn't get support from the advanced wingers.
On top of that it could leave our full backs exposed which was one of the biggest problems when we tried playing it at the beginning of the season.

The wingers never support because the players generally aren't good enough to play this formation, so you just end up with a stranded lone striker who gives the ball away, and the other side dominate and pin you back.
We need to stick with 442 and keep it simple.

The players are not good enough and we do need to keep it simple
I woud go in with a 5-3-2 though at Tranmere - nothing we have done away from home has worked (a point at MK aside) - may as welll try different formations now the season is gone
One silver lining about our poor form and results - LC will start to see which players are and are not good enough - and will act accordingly.
Best that he realises now rather than 10 games into next season, with the window closed and 14th in the league
