Does the poor lad ever get a break? He has been one of our better players since Clark took over, but once again is slated. It seems that once again he will be one of the players that the boo boys love regardless of performances. Re his missed penalty, at least he had the balls to take it.

I agree, Robbie is one of the most consistently good players we have. At this level everyone will make mistakes, but he more often than not plays well. He is trying with the fans - always acknowledges the fans at the beginning/end of the game. Fair play to him stepping up to take a penalty at 2-1 down with 3 or 4 minutes to go knowing just how fickles the Town fans are (after what happened to Lucas in the first half). He's growing in character, maybe Blackie's magic is beginning to work.

Lets get this into perspective, it was a minority doing the booing.
Robbie has been superrb of late and I'm sure he has the ball about him to realise most of us realise this

he missed a penalty, its no reason to boo him, the best players in the world have missed penalties before, in much higher pressure situations-he had the balls to take the penalty, hes obviously been nominated as our 2nd choice penalty taker, he was confident enough to take it, it was just a shame it didnt go in

Personnally I wish people would leave him alone. I agree also. The fact is some people are too stubborn - once they make up their minds about someone no matter what they do they're not going to be good enough. I think Robbie is having his best spell at the club and the way he's come on leads me to think if he keeps developing like this then he'll turn into one of the best left backs in the division. There is still work to do mind you but he's no where as bad as some make out.

Who has slated him? (I'm not saying they haven't but does anybody know of any quotes they could post on here so I could see without having to trawl through post after post?
I think he was the best defender on Saturday - not a compliment with the standard of the others but not an insult as he was decent).
The penalty was crap - slow, soft and too close to the goalkeeper - but anybody can miss a penalty so I wouldn't criticise him for that - that would be nitpicking.
But I think the opposite of you really, I think he is sheltered from stick more than anybody else.
FOR EXAMPLE: His marking is atrocious. Often caught with the opponent goal side. Even more often caught 10 metres away from a winger. Marking is a key skill of a defender and he doesn't tick that box. Nobody seems to question that though. But when Gary Rpberts puts a cross into the box that doesn't meet a Town head and he is "playing crap".
There is a lot of double standards regarding criticism towards Town players in my opinion.

I have been one of Williams biggest critics but thought he had his best game in a town shirt on Saturday. Having said that still think he defends like a schoolboy. His positional sense is absolutely awful for a professional footballer. If a winger stays wide he always gives him 20 yards of space, thats why he gets caught with the ball over his head so often. I am certain that opposing managers suss him as our weak link.

I wasn`t at the match on Saturday,on holiday, but my better half is disgusted at some of the comments made on here and at the game about RW.He has been one of our most improved and consistent players so far this season.FWIW I think we are seeing the player we all hoped he was going to be when AR signed him.I`m a definite won over RW fan. All the best football players can miss a penalty.Give the lad credit for what he has achieved this season.

The idiots are there week in week in to spit their venom at the Town players they love to hate. Jokeavitch needs no defending but Robbie does IMO.. the lads improved a hell of a lot since Werling came to the club and even Skarzy aint got a sniff either.

The reason that he looks to be playing better is because he couldn't of looked any worse than he did.
He is still crap, league 2 player at best, no wonder my work colleague from Barnsley laughed in my face when we paid a fee for him.

He is still crap, league 2 player at best, no wonder my work colleague from Barnsley laughed in my face when we paid a fee for him. His marking is worse than mine was at under 11 level. His crossing is possibly Championship level - the only problem is he doesn't get far enough forward to cross the ball more than once every other game. I think we could and should get someone better than him. These threads wouldn't have been made if only this had of surfaced before Saturday Scientists have come up with a formula for taking penalties that, if followed correctly, has a 100% success rate. The shot should be 65mph, you need a run-up of five to six paces from the edge of the area, approach the ball at an angle of 20 to 30 degrees and the ball must cross the goal-line at exactly 0.5m below the crossbar and the same distance inside the post. I agree with rjs.
Yes he is solid an has improved a hell of a lot but I still do not think he offers us enough to help us go up.
He is a solid league one player and no doubt will be around this league for a long time to come - I just dont think he has enough to bring us up. Its little things he does like delaying the pass which stops a fluent and speedy attack which makes me believe this. I know its not the easiest thing to spot but if you do study Williams game you will understand what I mean.
The worst culprit of this is Butler however. The amount of time taken to play a simple pass allows the opposition to mark up all of our players meaning the attack will struggle before it has started.
Again I stress that this is very hard to notice as they are not doing anything wrong - they just do not offer anything advantageous to going forward with possession.

I agree with this, so many times he is caught standing too far off the winger and isn't the quickest so cannot make it up. Though on the flipside he has improved immensly since Ternent left.

He has.
But to be honest, he has gone from atrocious to average (with marking still absent).

Williams' ball control, short interpassing game, and crossing are better than anyone else in the squad with the exception of Pilkington. He is also one of our better headers of the ball. The leaving of wingers unmarked until they try to enter the penalty area is one of the widely used tactics at all levels of the game. The main problem I have with Williams occurs when he is in an advanced position (say around the half way line) and makes an unsuccessful challenge for the ball; He does not get back with sufficient urgency to take the place of Butler or whoever has been obliged to take over Williams defensive responsibilities. However, he is not alone in this, Patrice Evra was criticised for the same error on Andy Gray's The Last Word on Sunday!!

I agree with rjs. Yes he is solid an has improved a hell of a lot but I still do not think he offers us enough to help us go up. You don't always need a spectacular LB or a spectacular XI, sometimes a solid player is fine - probably not good enough for Championship, but good enough in a promtion side...IMO yes. And he did a great job for Blackpool in their promotion run! And I think with RW improving and growing in confidence, he may even improve his weaknesses in his game - I don't think LB is a major area of concern for next season. RB/CM/CB and obviously upfront are priorities.

Without doubt, Robbie Williams has been one of the most consistent performers week in week out. If the rset of the defence were as consistent, things could be different. Keep up the good work Robbie.

IMO the pen on Saturday wasn't that bad it was a good save from the goalie.
