It isn't like it was under Davy where if you could run you got a pro contract from the academy. They now have to actually have some talent to progress from the academy to the first team

People shouldn't be surprised that from now on far far fewer academy players are offered pro-contracts. Only the very best who can offer something to the team will get them, the rest will be let go.

i was presently surprised that five got a contract, didn't really expect that many to be honest. As for Heagney he was never really good enough, got a bit of hype due to his underage Ireland caps but never really looked like he'd make it. Broadbent on the other hand did and I'm very surprised he's being let go, especially given our lack of other forward options both with the new academy graduates and current pros. I thought he'd be a cheap back-up option with the potential to make an impact.

I think Heagney is the most unlucky not to get a contract, international pedigree etc But the reality is that we've moved on from where we were two years ago when he probably would have got a contract (a la Luke Malcher who was also a RoI u16) I think when you're releasing a striker like Broadbent, Heagney (who isn't as good despite being a little younger) was always up against it IMO At the end of the day 7 goals in the academy from 20 apps (18 of them starts) probably suggests he's just a touch off the quality required www.htafc.com/page/AcademyDetail/0,,10312~1376420,00.html That said of all those released I think he has the best chance of finding another professional club

he is gutted poor lad deffo worth a 12 month deal I'm sure he's gutted but why was he definitely worth a 12 month deal? Sympathy? I don't think there's any room for that anymore.

A 12 month deal would have been a waste. He would have been shipped out on loan to a non-league club and never seen again.
Lee Clark knows he needs to sign strikers this summer that will bring him goals & looking at Heagneys strike record doesnt match what Clark is looking for.
Dean Hoyle has already stated he wants a squad of 20 first team squad players next season. Dave Heagney clearly doesn't fall into that category and I think its the best decision for him and the club.

Bit harsh he’s barely 18 and is leading the line against an experienced L**ds side. What do you expect? Most 18 year olds are light weight (bar that Italian kid at Manchester United), but that is defo something he can work on and will with age fill out and become less “light weight”
Heagney could yet make it in the game IMO, especially once he fills out and gains more composure in front of goal (which comes from experience). His international pedigree should see him get a few trials elsewhere and personally I’d be delighted if he proves Town wrong and goes on to have a fantastic career elsewhere!
He wouldn’t be the first junior to be released only to make an excellent career elsewhere, the best I heard was when West Ham released Paul Konchesky, Jloyd Samuel, Fitz Hall and Bobby Zamora all on the same day – ouch, that’s about £12m worth of Premier League talent let go!

Before going back to Ireland (where I think he still plays in there top league) I thought Hand had a trial at Stockport, which is what I'm saying Heagney may get. End of the day the lad may still have a future somewhere even if he has to drop down to non league like Fitz Hall did in my West Ham example, I think Hall ended up all the way down the league at Chatham before going to Oldham. Since which he's been sold for over £3m and has had a very good career. It does happen
