Driving down the M5 into sunny Devon this afternoon I nearly crashed the car laughing.A debate was taking place about the threat of relegation to Newcastle between some top sports journalists. The interviewer says to the assembled throng "If Newcastle go down it will be as big a shock as when Leeds were relegated"
"No it wont" says the journo. "Newcastle have been in the premiership for 16 years, come second twice, third 3 times and never finished lower than 16th.Leeds were only in 12yrs.It would be like comparing the corner shop closing with a supermarket closing!"

Did Leeds ever finish lower than 16th? Since they went up I don't really remember them ever in a relegation struggle...until they lost one that is!
Leeds were mostly a top 5 team over a period of 10 years or so weren't they?

Maybe, but did they ever finish lower than 16th?Yes.We have obviously never been there but it's interesting to hear how others view the team from the big yellow skip.

historically Leeds cant hold a candle to Newcastle United. Most people dont seem to realise that until the late 60s Leeds had not only won nothing, but spent most of their time in division 2. They had 5 or 6 years under Revie at the top when their poor crowds were a major embarassment, often pulling in only 20-25000 for league games when pushing for the championship. This at a time when crowds were still high before the decline in the second half of the 70s. In the 80s back in the second division they were down to 12000 or even less. They were re-invented as massive and for the first time started regularly filling ER only in the fluke league win in the early 90s. The have undoubtedly potential to be a top club because of the size of the city and their inexplicable national fan base, but to compare them with a club like NUFC is ridiculous.

Newcastle is a much smaller city, with another large prem club a few miles away, and they are still a much bigger club than Leeds.
Considering the size of the place and their catchment area, Leeds's support is rubbish

to be fair if you worked out the average attendance of our home game and the average attendance of leeds home games and put into consideration the size of each we actually have a higher percentage of fans going to games than leeds do.... bare in mind i based that on last seasons attendances as well..... can't remember the actual figures and i can't be arsed working them out now but i'm sure someone else has nothing better to do at 1.22 on a tuesday morning lol
