Good God do not hang about in Leyton! It's not exact a lovely place, nor is there much to do (my mate used to live there, the coach and horses was his local - I'm looking forward to going back there along with several hundered fellow Yorkshiremen and women).
As for good pubs in London - it depends what area you are talking about and what sort of thing you are looking for - there are lots! I guess the closest area to Leyton would be Liverpool St/Shoreditch area. Lots of nice pubs around there (more towards Shoreditch rather than L Street / the City which is a bit dead on weekends) however all very try hard and expensive.
Other than that good nights out can be had in the West End, Camden, Clapham and many places in between. I know my mates down from Hudders are planning a night out in Camden.

london bridge has got alot of good pubs in and around the borough market area. central has lots of good cheap pubs. the smiths pubs are the best, one called the john snow in soho. Smiths pub beer is ok for the south and its around 2 quid a pint. one just up from trafalgar square opposite the national portrait gallery called chandos or something. Soho has a reputation for being seedy or bit gay ha but there are some good pubs around and it has nice areas just have to look.

I am indeed. The lass is away for the weekend (back up in Huddersfield) so I am a free man for a few days. At the risk of sounding like a child, I am very excited.

Don't know if it's of any use to anyone... but there's a very good Premiere Inn (Hampstead) on Haverstock Hill (Belsize Park tube only 100 yards away) that is brilliantly situated for Camden, Hampstead, the West End, Kings Cross/Euston and the M1/A1. You'd be a so much better off booking in there than staying down in Leyton... believe me!

Camden's probably the best bet. Good pubs, good club nights and not too pricey in most places.
Clapham is alright but a lot of places think a bit too much of themselves and the prices tend to reflect this.
London Bridge / Borough Market is a good call. The Market Porter serves a mean pint of Harveys and the Bunch of Grapes nearby does a good range of Youngs.
Personally, I'd avoid Leicester Square like the plague on a Saturday evening.
It all depends what you want from your pubs really.

We're heading to Camden as well. Well in theory anyway. You can't go far wrong in London - there's decent pubs just about everywhere that's fairly central.
