Is there any point to this useless rag anymore? The fixtures are out by 10.00 am this morning but even that is too late for todays paper. I can remember as a kid on a Saturday evening at around 6 o'clock listening for the letter box going and racing my brother to get to it first because it would have a detailed report of that AFTERNOONS match. Now it's just a complete waste of time, i read all tonights articles on here yesterday for gods sake.

The Examiner now comes out in the morning. So, it is not surprising the fixtures weren't in today's paper!

I kind of figured that! That's my point, a once fine paper is now reduced to yesterdays news, doesn't really work for a local paper!!

I am not sure what difference it makes really. And to be fair to the Examiner it was the first (official source) for the two new signings.

Prob not enough demand for a 'late edition' I would guess...

Prob not enough demand for a 'late edition' I would guess... something to do with the daily mirror owning it i believe or it being printed in Oldham...

It was the same with The Sentinel down here - printed too early for fixtures - don't think there's much they can do about it! Pre-Internet, I used to rely on the Examiner for everything Town and always found it a good read. I guess that modern technology has made it seem much worse than what it is.

Is this thread perhaps why that fanzine thing never took off?

Newspapers are a thing of the past. You're just watching the slow death spiral.
It's all good. When they made the decision to constantly lie to the general population for advertising money - that was the beginning of the end. Why would anyone feel compelled to read bullshit, when they can read stuff that somewhat resembles the truth elsewhere ?? Like here !!!
Thank God for the internet.

Hmmmh, agree about the long slow death spiral, but I think that it is actually quite worrying. Until recently, for the last goodness knows how many years, I bought the Examiner every day. Now that it is a morning publication, nobody will deliver it and so now I buy it once a week on a Friday and glance at the online publication, for which I pay nothing. There is no successful online pay model for newspapers and as the number of newspapers decline, so will the choice of opinions. I think that will probably become a very bad thing. If you honestly want to get your "news" off messageboards like this one, then good luck to you.

Good point benhomly---in the 60s you could walk up town after the game and buy a (non examiner) sports paper with all results printed---although you had to quite often turn onto back page for late scores. Then by time you got home we used to have to wait til about 6.15 to 6.30 to get the examiner as you say with match report. I believe there is still demand for both of these

Definitely a thing of the past... same with a lot of magazines - they usually post the same articles on the internet anyway so why waste the money on the paper/magazine. Or on some music forums, articles from magazines are scanned by one person and shared by thousands. I guess it could be a good thing for the rainforest.

The best bit is that the paper comes out in the morning. Before the horse racing starts, but it still has tomorrows race cards in it like it did when it was an afternoon paper .

I should dearly hope that newspapers don't die out. There's something rather nice about holding and reading a paper.
Personally, looking a laptop screen in the pub, with a pint of ale, doesn't have the same appeal.
They said the same about record shops, if you remember. There's nothing like racing down to a record shop to get your grubby little hands on a record you've been anticipating for some time... reading the sleevnotes on the bus/train home... ahh, nice one.

Also, it collates all the news, unlike wome parts of the web where you can end up reading somwthing from a couple of years ago. I don't mind reading on screen or on paper - sometimes its nice to get away from a screen if you work on them. the_wrong_boy

60p a bloody week!!! That's what I used to get paid for delivering t'examiner for 6 days a week, monday to saturday. Suppose the perk of the job was that I would get straight on the round on a Saturday when I got back from the match to read the match report on my way round delivering!! Can remember Bobby Hoy scoring 2 goals in a space of a few minutes for a rare town win in them days and seeing his name in bold twice!!

Sad in a way to see papers decline.
The Daily Telegraph published all the MP's fiddling whereas the BBC doesn't have the guts to do the same and have just become government puppets.
I only started watching Town regularly at 13 with the money earned from delivering the papers all over Upper Hopton whilst at school.
Hope the best ones survive.

I refuse to buy the Examiner now, it never prints any of towns opinions about Davy and the price is scandalous for the ammount of junk thats in it, I used to do a paper-round when I was younger and used to sit at the top of the hill reading the sport, now it sucks. Big time.
