I've got an interview tomorrow which doesn't really affect my job but thought I'd give it a go. One of the likely questions is
"How have you had to break bad / difficult news to a co-worker, how did you go about it and what were the direct results of your actions?"
if you've got any fascinating stories of your own for this then chuck them on here because I haven't got any. If I get them before tomorrow afternoon I'll tell them during the interview tim-roth-reservoir-dogs-toilet-anicdote-stylee to see what reaction it gets. I'll take anything and pass it off as an old job - factory work, fireman, bell boy, lawyer, gynecologist, chemist, bar work, author, fruit and veg salesman, recruitment consultant (that's about all the jobs I can remember people on awag owning up to)

When a colleague reversed into the gaffers car, I consoled him by telling him it was a very novel and artistic way of handing his notice in.
"I don't like to beat about the bush, as you well know Roy, so here it is, the others have noticed that you need to take more care with your personal hygiene, to put it in laymans terms and so you know exactly where I'm coming from, you fucking stink mate get some soap on yer it doesn't cost much"

When I worked for the Exam Bored* helpline coming up to the summer term, we were rushed off our feet and the boss had to tell us all that we would all have to cut our lunchbreaks, start earlier and stay later, lose our 30 seconds reporting time before the next call came through and not ask for or take any leave during that time unless it was something unavoidable that can't be helped, like a funeral or something.
Anyway, this one guy (Jon) asked if he could maybe have a Wednesday to attend some concert or other. Naturally the answer was an apologetic no. Anyway, on the Wednesday Jon rang in sounding really, really ill. It raised an eyebrow but he really did sound dreadful and the boss accepted that sick leave really couldn't be helped, get well soon etc etc.
Later that day, boss decided to send a "thanks so much, I know it's a bit of a grind but hang on in there team etc etc" e-mail round to the whole office. Including Jon. He was surprised when Jon replied. Until he read the e-mail...
"I will be out of the office all day on Wednesday. Please contact me on 07somethingsomethingsomething".
So he did. To tell him not to bother coming back in again ever again.

Some of these questions at interview are absolutely stupid. The interviewer ought to try telling someone their loved one has just died. It doesn't make any difference how many times I have to do it, it doesn't get any easier. Telling someone they stink or are not very good on the telephone pales into insignificance.

The best* response I had to an interview question was when an HR person (who was trying to justify being on the interview panel) asked me what I would bring to the Intensive care Unit and I said sandwiches
