Huddersfield 2-1 Blues By Alan Watton - 05/01/2008 23:47
When the F.A. Cup Headlines include the words ¿a day of shocks¿ then you can guarantee that Blues are one of them. Without resorting to the record books the following come to mind.
Watford 1960, Port Vale 1962, Swindon 1973, Altrincham 1976, Torquay, Reading, Kidderminster, Wrexham, Sunderland and now Huddersfield. If you can think of any more then you are sadder than the poor 2,500 fans who went to the rubbish bin that is now the Galpharm Stadium. How a state of the art stadium has become such a dump is incredible. The pitch has yet to see the rugby league outfit, the Huddersfield Giants this season but the pitch was more suitable for a ploughing contest rather than professional sport.
If you think that I am looking for excuses then I am not. I am trying to paint a picture of what Blues sunk to today. Huddersfield Town are a team down on its uppers. They can't win a corner, they are skint and today were short of some key players.
Blues started badly, what's new? The defence looked uncertain and when Kelly failed to clear the ball it reached Beckett of the chest of Taylor and he tapped home.
Blues had a gale behind them but could not pass the ball to a colleague and the long balls simply ran away from them. Forssell did break away down the left and failed to beat Glennon in a one on one.
Football was almost unseen as Blues could not overcome Town's enthusiasm. Muamba who was tremendous throughout finally burst through and tried to net with a side foot shot. The keeper palmed it into the path of O'connor who slotted home.
In a rare Huddersfield attack Queudrue, got himself in a tangle and felled Holdswoth. The free kick found Brandon unmarked on the far post. His header looked certain to find the net as it was arrowed to the bottom corner. Taylor somehow managed to keep it out.
Blues did manage to get De Ridder and McSheffrey into the game but each time the balls into the box were wanting.
The second half was all Blues and the game started to become a decent cup tie. Blues opened up the home defence in their first attack but O'Connor's shot lacked any venom. He repeated the move moments later and Glennon could only parry. Forssell was just unable to take advantage.
Mcsheffrey is becoming a man of mystery. It's a mystery how he managed to score 16 goals last season and looked every bit a £4m player. Now, if there is a decision to make he makes the wrong one. Several times he tried wild goal attempts with players better placed. With the goal at his mercy and two players eight yards from goal he cut in from the left and shot with his right. The ball went hopelessly wide, the crowd went berserk and his colleagues bowed their heads in disbelief.
Jerome had been chomping at the bit to get on and show his old club what they missed. While he was warming up one of the home supporters was ejected presumably for abusing Jerome. The visiting fans got their wish and on he came. Frankly he was awful. He and de-Ridder were treated to some special attention as the increasingly desperate home defence resorted to thuggery. Although Ref Tanner was quick to yellow card the offenders, one could not help thinking some more famous refs would have whipped out a red. Blues free kicks were equally poor as were the numerous corners.
On 81 minutes the Blues FA CUP nightmare continued. Queudrue was caught by his lack of pace and the right wing cross found Brandon alone on the far post. With time to autograph the ball he tapped home for the winner. With eight minutes to go Blues still managed to force a couple of corners. McSheffrey was given another waist high tackle but the resulting free kick by De-Ridder had little menace.
Alex McLeish looked shell shocked after the game and apologised to the travelling fans. Don't worry Alex we are used to it. What we need urgently is major signings. No misfits, jail birds, or anyone past their sell by date. 2 defenders a midfielder and a striker MINIMUM £20million. Arsenal next week, I think I shall lie down in darkened room.

Mirfield Chris and I were up the very top of the LB, and I have to agree the stadium is looking a bit dog eared. Peeling paint and rust very much in evidence and faded red chairs in the Lower Pan.

If so I can see exactly why they mixed Holdsworth up with Kamara.
