I get it unfortunately he is at a disadvantage, he's not strong enough to play as a target man and bring other people into the game. He doesn't run at people and create chances that way. He's not a creative striker who plays a defence splitting pass. All he does is score goals and I think most premier league managers will look for strikers that can do more for the team as well as score a few goals. At the price he's likely to cost and his high wages I just think he would be considered too much of a luxury Isn't scoring goals what its all about? I don't recall the likes of Gary Lineker or Michael Owen doing much for the team other than sticking it in the back of the net every week. Lineker played in an era of 2 up front where one was more likely to be a poacher the game has changed. Owen when he first came along had pace to burn and used it create his own chances as well as get on the end of others and he came through the ranks of a top club they didn't need to gamble with a large transfer fee. Klose and van Persir are proven international players

Ok, many people have been shouting about who they want at Town realistically on other threads, so I thought I'd neaten up all the rumours and only post the likely ones. Decided someone should cut the unrealistic bullshit like Troy Deeney and focus on players we could actually get. So here is the list of players we are actually rumoured to be linked with: Cyrus Christie (heavily) Harry Maguire Chris O'Grady Rados?aw Majewski Tomasz Cywka Craig Cathcart Sean St. Ledger Mike Van Duinen Gary Mackay-Steven Stevie May Chris Eagles Ricardo VazTe Kieran Agard Jay Emmanuel-Thomas Tom Beugelsdijk Jose Baxter Tom Lawrence Franck Moussa Chris Solly Peter Whittingham Tommy Rowe Jake Buxton Luke Freeman Sam Baldock Chris Kirkland Luke Ayling Mark Hudson Chris Burke Darren Pratley Matt Gilks Jacob Mellis Massimo Luongo Kirk Broadfoot Emmanuel Ledesma Ben Watson David N'Gog Jonathan Parr Reda Johnson Luke Steele Marc Pugh Simeon Jackson Jean Beausejour David Cotterill Bobby Hassell Gary Caldwell Zat Knight Matthew Etherington David Forde Reuben Noble-Lazarus Sylvan Ebanks-Blake Paddy McCourt Ben Hamer Lloyd Dyer (linked, but shit) Andy Keogh (linked, but shit) Danny Batth (slightly unrealistic) Harry Arter (slightly unrealistic) Chris Wood (slightly unrealistic) Jack Hunt (slightly unrealistic) Glenn Murray (slightly unrealistic) Ryan Gauld (slightly unrealistic) Marc Albrighton (unrealistic) Sean Morrison (unrealistic) Anthony Pilkington (unrealistic) Much to speculate here... "Kin hell, are you bored?

Love it on twitter when other teams' fans start quoting the examiner like it's a local trusted source

Dont think its thread worthy, and Im not sure if anyone else has posted it but... Clayton retweeted this I'm sure he does want to stay as long as he gets the money he wants. If he doesn't he'll be retweeting Boro/Brighton/Forest shirts with his name on the back. If anything, all the fans begging him to stay are only blurring the contract discussions and putting fan power on his side.

Our best players should be our best paid. Clayton was our official player of the season last year and in the 2 seasons he has been here with the exception of one blip his performance level has been consistently high. What we need to ask is whether we could find anyone better to come in. Its all well and good taking 2mill for him but with our salary cap and our track record for signing centre mids over the past 15 years, could we do any better? I fear not.

Be a shame to see him end up with Lee Clark again, don't think it'd be the best move he could make. In and out of the side every week all over again

So then, 20 days until the season starts and we're still short of a centre back, attacking midfielder and striker Plenty of time

No way is Gobern as bad as folk are making out on here.
He has hardly been given a consistent run of games and I have no doubt he will go on to better himself. There is a reason Southampton wanted to keep hold of him.
He needs a fresh start because the fans are on his back from the off here

losing clayton (if he goes) will be the biggest transfer story from our club this close season.

Looked good when Robins first came in, though as a unit we were atrocious at that point. I liked him when I've seen him play (not loads I admit). Maybe a bit like Vaughan, week in week out is better for him. Rest/drop him and he picks up niggling injuries.

I have seen him have some terrific games but unfortunately he has found his opportunities limited. There is a decent player in there like you say and I think he will realise his potential with another club

Don't think gobern is anywhere near as bad as people make out, dictates the tempo really well, got a presence about him, can win headers with his height, can hold onto the ball well, If he just had more energy to get around breaking up the oppositions play would be perfect to play deep allowing Clayton to push further up, can this not be trained into a player and save us a transfer fee for a player who based on robins signings so far I doubt would be much better anyway

Gobern was EXCELLENT at the end of the 2012/2013 season and everyone on here was happy he got a new deal. Yet some people are coming up with ridiculous comments like he's only had 3 good games. Short memory's indeed. It's almost like looking into one of those fun fair silly mirrors... A lot of fans will see a big 6ft3" midfielder who on the only clip they've seen snapped a Bournemouth player in half, and expect him to go thundering into tackles and knock other players off of the ball. When in reality the mirror is playing tricks on us and he's a 5ft7" playmaker with glass ankles. He made a mistake in the home game against Middlesbrough, but recovered and was the best midfielder by a long chalk for the rest of the game, yet all we got on here, Radio Leeds and Twitter was a complete lambasting and character assassination of him. He's just one of those players that a lot of fans don't get and won't want to give a chance to IMO.

The one mistake against Middlesbrough has turned most town fans against him..unlike claytons identical error against Blackburn which seems to have gone unnoticed

Myself and most around me were willing him to get his head up and play his way out of the situation that he created vs Boro. And to be fair to him i thought he did ok. You get a % of idiots at every game. But I felt the crowd were ok with him that night. Despite my offer to drive Gobern 40 miles down the M6 I haven't totally given up on him. But overall I think he has been a bit of a disappointment. Sure there have been injuries. But sometimes I wonder whether he "wants it" enough. I'd love to be proved wrong

He's got glass ankles, and there have been dozens of games where he's started off well, took a kick to the ankle and completely wilted into a useless performance. A player that wants it would kick back. Mentally he's a bit of shrinking voilet. In that Boro game, 2 mins previously he'd played the exact same ball to Gerrard who'd cocked up and we almost conceded. Gobern looked up, looked at AG, then put his head down to knock it back to him but Gerrard didn't want anything to do with it and stepped up. Gobern takes the responsibility, but he wasn't helped by his team mate on that occasion.
