Ah Ah, 697 people in stadium and about 15 of us on kilner bank. Couldn't hear a thing on the banking either. Oh forgot this bit, a copper called gap gob came and shifted us off kilner. So never got to the tiger feet song.

In the late 70s, I'm sure you used to to be able to see old "train lines" breaking through the tarmac that had been slapped on top, at the bus terminus by Lady of Lourdes Junior School (other side of the woods from All Saints). Trolley buses had "normal tyres". So was their an extensive tram service prior that in the town also, or is my memory playing up about the tracks? Is the old (recently restored) bus stop shelter thing on Halifax Road at Edgerton a trolley bus stop or a tram stop? Before my time but I understand there was an extensive tram system round Hudds. I'm told that the shelter that you mention WAS a tram shelter. Apparently Somerset Road (to Almondbury) was created to allow trams a straight(ish) run to the village from Town - previously the main route to Almonbury was up A.Bank. There are quite a few photographs of trams and tram routes on a facebook page "Old Photo's of Hudds" which may be of interest.. I'm sure there used to be the remnants of a tram depot around the viaducts area heading out towards Fartown

The tram depot middle top where the old abbatoir used to be if you know that (now a woodworks place I think)...I do vaguely remember seeing some lines on the ground around there, possibly in the land in the woodworks and possibly seen when passing on a train on the viaduct above? Interesting that what I think is now the waste recycling plant was marked as a fairground. I know in the 70s and 80s when travelling fairs were in town at various locations that they used to leave their caravans to live in on the land off Red Doles Lane perhaps half a mile further away from town following the train line, wonder if the two are linked. Also there was a separate goods station which I THINK is the land where Matalan and the retail park next to that is nowadays? If you go beyond that to St Johns Road (the Birkby direction away from the Town centre), there does seem to be a lot of cavernous old buildings there (theres a laser tag place in some of them) and I THINK that one of the old bus companies has garages in there, which would probably follow on from it being an old train hub?

Quite a surprise reading that ---- I was under the impression that the system lasted for a lot longer than a mere 35 years! The main thing I remember about the trollybuses was how quiet they were. And, no doubt, in this age of Global warming, carbon capture, and green energy requirement, the nett amount of energy consumed (as well as being much cleaner than fossil fuels) was more beneficial to the environment.... Against that, of course, there were miles of wires strung along the streets -- so, as ever, you pays your money etc.etc. Great photo of the old ground - brings back many happy memories - but it had to go.... UTT Oh dear! Mentioning the above in reply to philincalifornia... guess you don't look at Off topic a lot? disappointed Indeed I most certainly DO read the occasional threads by the great man on the subject of Global "Warming" and (although I do not have his scientific training and background knowledge of the subject) my instincts - based on having been threatened by the popular press with an "Ice Age" < forty years ago - are broadly supportive of his general take on the topic...This especially applies when I listen to that tw*t of an Energy Minister proposing further wind farms - the whole blinkin' lot off the coast of Gt. Yarmouth probably don't produce enough electricity to boil a kettle for my morning cup of tea on many days... I can't back this up with numbers (nearly fifty years since t/buses ran) - but does anyone seriously doubt the statement above about the quantity and quality of energy that is/was required to run an urban transport system?

I dont count the Fairies, Danish autonomous region and all that. Only missing 3 countries in Europe.....Iceland (the clue is in the name), Albania (no great loss) and Cyprus....i plan a little 5 day trip there in October. As for daughters, theirs will be a Prime Minister methinks with the Queen of Denmark head of state....now a Princess would be a good catch....tally-ho!!!! Going to Iceland in November for a week. Can't believe for a second you wouldn't want to visit. It's a bucket list destination. Of course i want to go. Been waiting for them to be drawn in Englands group for 30 years now. My pal went about 20 years ago, £6 for an orange juice then!

I started watching in 1962-3 and can't remember trolly buses on Leeds Road - although it might just be my memory! Oh yeah, they went over to Bradley and turned around there. I must admit though, I didn't know it was so extensive - look at the map of routes on here: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Trolleybuses_in_HuddersfieldGood find....i felt sure they went down to the Town ground.

Is the old (recently restored) bus stop shelter thing on Halifax Road at Edgerton a trolley bus stop or a tram stop? Trams went all over central Hudds. They ran on rails. The trolley buses were tyred buses powered by the electric pantechnicon. Think the old wood shelter dates to about 1920 and was a trolley bus/omnibus stop
