Got to say I am impressed with Butterfield. Always looking for the ball and wants to drive forward.

Can't he be judged on his own merits rather than compared to Clayton .? I agree though he was good today... Although against an abject outfit

Last season the midfield played purely to Claytons strengths. This season we have a cracking mix of everything and the 3 CMs all compliment each other really well. As far as JB goes he has all the attributes, excellent set piece taker, runs all game and is able to shoot with both feet. Hopefully that goal will give him a bit more belief because all he lacks is a bit of swagger. Really impressed. No coincidence Hogg is showing his true potential this season too.

As above, the midfield is so much more balanced this season. JB plays a lot further forward than Clayton used to. Certainly don't miss Norwood either.

Whilst I think Clayton had a better range of passing, what I really liked about Butterfield today was his movement without the ball, particularly in getting up the pitch to support Holt. Can't say I ever remember Clayton busting a gut to support an attack, which is partly the reason the lone striker was isolated in previous years.

All the more reason to compare them. Both very talented with the only difference being we are quids in.

Clayton shone in a shit midfield, he would be a passenger playing with Coady and Butterfield, even with Hogg if he keeps it up

I know what you meant, I agree comparing them is understandable. Clayton used to make us tick and now its Butterfield. End of. I like Butterfield more, he works harder and gets stuck in more.

Played really well today. For me his set pieces could improve a little. Agree midfield looks more balanced than last year, blackpool we're poor though and will be interesting to see how we fare against the top sides now. Certainly looking forward to the games versus Brighton and forest. Derby will be really tough

Always felt we saw the best of Clayton, whereas JB looks like he may develop further, with a bit of confidence and some coaching. Likewise I believed there was more to come from Norwood, but maybe the move could prompt this in him. I wouldn't be in a rush to swap them back. I wonder what Clayts and Norwood midfield might be like with an in form Hogg..

Massive Clayton fan but I have to say Butterfield is looking similar to Clayton but much more athletic, gets around pitch much better than Clayton did. Delighted he got a goal today, reckon he needed it, may be the first of many. Boro not doing too bad with Clayton so maybe everyone's a winner!

I wonder what Clayts and Norwood midfield might be like with an in form Hogg..Honestly doubt it would have been much difference to what we saw previously. For me the issue was Clayton and Norwood were too similar in their style, and it left Hogg having to do the work of all three midfielders in terms of tackling and breaking up the play. In my opinion, we're not completely relying on Hogg to break up the play - both Coady and Butterfield are willing to get stuck in and are competent in terms of defending (Coady in particular). There's less pressure on him to perform and Hogg is excelling because of it.

The extra mobility was very evident today. Clayton was class on the ball though. Good business from hoylie & huge profit on Norwood who couldn't be arsed most of the time.

He was my MoM along with Scannell. Everything starts with Butterfield.

When you see butters warm up he doesn't really interact with other players but as long as he plays well suppose that doesn't matter

Butterfield covers far more grass than Clayton, Hogg has been outstanding these last few games and Coady looks a superb prospect. Thinks are coming together nicely. Oh and Scannell has turned into Arjen Robben overnight!!

'Even' Hogg,,, thats why i said if he keeps it up,,, remember he was garbage a while back He was never garbage, just bang average, but would be remembered each game by some for one bad ball or getting caught in possession. There'll be one poster on here who will still insist he did nothing yesterday. Anyway, back on topic, I'd still say Clayton was the better player, but not necessarily in our team. I also find it odd when people refer to his range of passing- I thought it often let him down, usually after some brilliant control and composure under pressure.
