Don't think boro overpaid. They offloaded a player who wasn't in their first team plans and paid out £1M- fly shit by their standards. They wasted millions under Strachan a few years back on Scottish has beens.
For £1M they have an excellent all rounder. Excellent technical player who can pass, tackle and score goals, reads the game well, very professional & committed and rarely ever gets injured.
If they get up this year then it's an even more astute signing.
It's never good losing your best players but what Dean Hoyle ensures is that we get value and good replacements with potential.

Clayton was a top player for us, albeit with a couple of runs of indifferent form under his belt. He looked class against us at JSS, but having a good team is about more that individual brilliance, as we all know - Butterfield has come on by leaps and bounds with a good run of games and fits perfectly into the way CP is getting us to play. If it's a question of who is the better player, I really don't care - Butterfield is doing a great job for us at the moment!

From a Boro point of view I am happy to see JB doing well, he will score goals in this division and his link up play is very good, he is a very good number 10. We just didn't have the room to play him, he cant play in a defensive 2 like Clayton and Leadbitter, We have an embarrassment of riches for the number 10 role so we couldn't fit him in. Clayton has been our best signing though, gets through a lot of donkey work and his range of passing/tackling/awareness/ability to switch play is excellent. He has really allowed Leadbitter to flourish and has protected the best defense in the league very well. Sounds like it has been a great deal for both clubs and both players.

He could play anywhere in midfield, and has done throughout his career. What you meant to say was, Karanka didn't want him to play for Boro. Because I remember your pre season and Butterfield was getting rave reviews in that sitting position you've now got Clayton in. I see the Boro journos and Boro fans on twitter are going very very defensive about the Examiner article. They're all over it. But seriously, the stats, be them defensive or offensive based - barring a couple which are very close - are in Butterfield's favour. However, I've no real interest in comparing them. All I know is that we've received good money for a good player who wanted out, bought a player who wasn't wanted by his club who has come in and done really well, for a small fee. I wish Clayton all the best. But I don't care if he's better or worse than JB. He's not our player. JB is. And long may that be the case because I prefer him over Clayton so far and believe him to already be key to what Town are trying to do under Powell.

Watched the game yesterday, He does what he says on the tin, leaves folk like bam ford and Leadbitter to score, just plays a very good deeper midfield role. Top of the league now too.

I bet the ones on here who said Boro was a sideways step are currently looking a little sheepish.

Ain't this argument going to swing one way then the other as the weeks go by? Both sides seem happy with the deal. It's been a win win all round.

The Clayton Butterfield transfer has proved successful for both parties. In our team, our midfield looks so much stronger than last season, and Boro, very well possibly the best midfield in league. That Leadbitter is quite something.

just plays a very good deeper midfield role. Exactly what he did at Town.

Sorry guys, perhaps I should have enraged the Thread Police and started a separtate thread - this was not meant to be a furher analysis of the Clayton:Butterfield debate, that is done & dusted for me. More, I seem to recall Clayton really, REALLY, REALLY wanted to go to Brighton, who are now 3rd from bottom.
Is all

As opposed to Town, who are 8th from the bottom & Middlesbrough, who are Really, Really, Really joint top
