His positioning was fine but it looped over his head and just under the bar- the one place it would have gone in. Unlucky- no fault of shilts. If we were bringing on a keeper for the pens, then Beasant would have been a far better choice than Woods. He had a cracking record against pens. Exactly. His legs had gone and he no longer had the spring/agility to get a hand on it. I do agree re: Beasant though. However, my 5 mins of googling failed to find out whether the whole squad was available on the bench back then. I guessed, on balance, that at that time then you'd have to name the subs and they'd be limited to about 5 - leaving Woods on the bench as the second choice? I'm happy to be corrected on that though. Just checked and you're right. You could name 5 subs and only use 2 of them. Beasant wasn't one of the subs but Woods was. In that semi we only used 1 sub so in theory Robson could have subbed Woods on for the pens.

It is only the poor standard of English players that make Rooney seem like a class apart. He is good in today's context, within our team and worth his place. I like that his effort can make up for a lack of real style. I agree with Nick he is quite krug and a bit shirte, probably.. Just think he's so average , never near legend status , I'd even say JV a is better when fit. The utter rubbish you wrote while clearly drunk the other day made more sense than this!

Rooney was awesome when he initially came through as an out and out centre forward, he was similarly impressive a couple of years back for United when he scored 30 goals in a season as a centre forward. He hasn't reached his potential because he has been allowed to dictate his own career by trying to be the new Gazza and playing deep, such a complete waste. Messi and Ronaldo have been pushed further and further up the pitch as there careers have progressed to the point where they are the focal point of the team for club and country, Rooney has seemingly moved in completely the opposite direction.
Look at the run he made that won the penalty on Saturday, he seemed to be playing on pure instinct and just driving towards the goal in the smae way he did in 2004, I can't remember the last time I saw him even try such a run, he would usually take a took and look for some 1 in 1,000 pass through the eye of a needle.
Such a shame as the young lad that set Euro 2004 alight had the potential to drag us up to the top table of world football.

Wouldn't call him a world class player and maybe not even an England great. Good/very good yes, but he's not in the same class as Ronaldo/Messi.
