closet English teams fan I'd rather go with the Jerries. Safe standing, not afraid to put a 19 year old Dane into the thick of it, more honest, generally less diving (Robben excepted). Did you all support Leeds when they were in the Champions League that time? so would I if they hadn't bombed our chip shop

Did you all support Leeds when they were in the Champions League that time? Doesn't matter how great you think Bayern is, why would you want a foreign team to do better than an English team? The better English teams do the better it generally is for English football, and with the national team kind of being a bit shit internationally at least performing well in the Champions League can make it a little better. As for the Leeds comment, are Man City our main local rivals? If Leeds were in the CL while we were several divisions below I wouldn't really be cheering for them but wouldn't exactly be wishing they'd lose either, that's kind of pathetic IMO.

They had two England players playing you muppet and one of them was only on through injury to other foreign players. How does that have the slightest bearing on the national team? As for the Leeds comment, what fkn difference does 30 miles make? It's alright to follow Man City in Europe because it's 'better for English football' but not Leeds because even though they are English they are 'local'. Absolute bollocks logic.

Obviously missed the whole point of my comment which is why would you want a foreign team to do better than an English team? The teams are representing their countries leagues to show who's strongest. Hence my comment about national team and Leeds/rivals. Wanting the team from your country to fail is quite pathetic if your team can't even make into the competition.

The teams are representing their countries leagues to show who's strongest. Hence my comment about national team and Leeds/rivals. I explained in the first post you quoted from me why I wanted Bayern to win tonight (the absolute truth is I couldn't give a toss who won really). I don't care who's countries premier league is strongest. I genuinely have bigger fish to fry than worrying over little pissing contests like that. It's got nowt to do with Town not being in it, I just don't like Man C and I've a huge respect for German football. As soon as England are knocked out of a World Cup my support goes to the Jerries (safe standing, cheap ticket prices, cracking youth policy, good football, a more honest side than the South American/Ities/Iberian countries).

Me too unless it's Liverpool or Leeds Each to their own of course but there's more logic in my logic. I've given better reasons for wanting Bayern to win than anyone has for wanting Man C to win. They've hardly any English players anyway and one of them is on loan.

Thought Munich got what they deserved tonight. A much better side than Man city even with 10 men but their own arrogance lost them the game. Took their foot right off the gas 2nd half. Not sure hart had anything to do after half time at all. Nice to see 2 english clubs beating the germans in one night.

It's a little less pressing for English sides than the likes of Italy and France** (ye Gods, Italy is a mess in this*) but maintaining a decent coefficient is well worth it long term.
*The farce that was Atalanta (allegedly) instructing their squad not to get into Europe by losing important games last season, then Parma taking Torino's spot off them on the last day only to be ejected for financial viability reasons, so Toro have had to go in and practically bankrupt themselves as a result. Means that Italy's ranking gets lower and lower as worse and worse teams who can ill afford to be in Europe end up qualifying when the places just used to go to Milan and Inter by rote just because their squads were deep enough to see off the likes of...Atalanta, Chievo, Parma, Torino, etc.
**Lyon have been abject this season

Its weird whats happened in Italy. Doesn't seem too long ago seria a was THE league in the world. Late 80s-early 90s was it? All the top players over there, Italia 90 etc. Now it barely registers. Think theres a stat that our Championship average higher crowds than seria A. What do you put it down to- corruption? Hooliganism? Dull over-tactical football? Bit of all 3?
the stadiums don't help. Too many overly huge soulless bowls with running tracks. Went to the San Siro once for a Milan- Juve game about 10 years ago. No running track and a full house and the atmosphere was incredible, but the football was dull as ditchwater. The violence before, during and after was far more entertaining and the stadium itself is an awfull concrete dump really.

To be honest, probably more your fourth point than anything else.
I wrote a lot about Bologna last year, so taking them (and their 1990 redeveloped stadium) as an example, the venues are old, rotten and downright dangerous, as I recall, when Juventus were in town, the police took any weapons/rocks/things that could be thrown off fans on the way in and ushered them into an area with a pile of rubble, with predictable results.
Beyond that, the football is awful to watch a lot of the time (though the Zeman disciples number enough to dispel negativity most of the time, seeing Atalanta and Torino - and Bologna last year - line up 3-5-1-1 and even 5-3-1-1 makes for tedium).
There's little or no money in the game and, even though Juventus have been streets ahead in Serie A lately, they can barely make a ripple in Europe.
Not sure on the attendances but if it is wrong, it won't be far wrong.

In terms of the stadia, so few are club owned (just the Juventus Arena that I can think of) so clubs have to rely on councils for renovation and they have nothing.
Had Italy been given Euro 2016 it would have helped, but nobody will watch crap football played by largely foreign players in a shitheap.
Milan/Inter currently paying for years of overspending and are the only couple who could legitimately compete with Juve long term; Berlusconi is tightening the purse strings by.putting his daughter Barbara on the board.
His list of court appearances is a mesmerising catalogue

Entertaining game. Navas wasted a lot of good possession on the right....and City's defence seemed terrified to tackle Robben! And shame the little Argie wasn't English........he's the rich man's Michael Owen!

To be honest I used to enjoy some English sides get their comeuppence in Europe but since moving abroad and watching some CL games amongst several nationalities i'm wanting them all to win and taking pride in it when they do.
I do not think that I will have the dilemma of worrying about my loyalties about that club from up the A62 getting back into Europe in my lifetime

And all these folk who would want Man City to win in Europe but not Leeds, it's crazy pants.. and it's hypocritical.
It's that same lack of balanced thinking that says 'I believe in rehabilitration for criminals but not ones who are going back into well paid work'.

If someones representing me, then i take pride in their success. Thats just being a sports fan isn't it.
At club level town represent me obviously, but in europe any english club does as they aren't just representing themselves, they're representing english domestic football in general IMO.
Do i want the club from the english league to win, or the one from the german league? English EVERY time.
