I try not to do negativity, which is so easy when we lose after an appalling performance. Too many Madness knee-jerkers on this board typifies the frustration amongst Town fans at the moment.
Nevertheless, it is clear that if the club continues with the football model that they have implemented, then this club will continue to wallow in the lower part of the Championship until eventually the trap door will open back to League 1, just as it has done on previous occasions. Death by a thousand cuts will eventually sap all the enthusiasm out of the club and supporters leaving it a prime candidate for relegation.
It appears that from the club there is:
1. No impetus or focused desire to be the best you can with the talents that are available (look at Bradford and Sheff United for pointers).
2. No code of values regarding how we should be playing football (it is an entertainment industry after all).
3. No pride from a number of players, not necessarily pride in the club (who would expect that), but pride in their own performances as professional footballers.
4. A manager that seems unable to motivate the majority and at times appears tactically inept (and this could be levelled at our last 5 managers). Who is really to blame for this? I’d suggest the blame lies with those who have appointed him and those who advise him.
There has got to be a top to bottom re-evaluation in the close season and this may mean being absolutely ruthless with directors, management and coaching staff. If we aren’t willing/cannot throw millions at the club to gain success, then there has to be a different formula put in place than the one we have at present. You only have to look at Brentford and Ipswich to see that it is possible to go a long way in making a silk purse out of a sow’s ear!
What we have isn’t working, either from the point of view signing the right players in enough numbers to make a difference, or providing a pathway for younger players to reach the first team.
This all sounds terribly negative, but I’m always hopeful that there will be a winner out there who we will appoint as the next manager, a Mick Buxton type who will then sign players with a winning mentality, under a system that gets the very best out of the assets that are available, and is allowed to make the important footballing decisions. Here’s hoping!
