I started writing a book six years ago. I had ideas for a few years previously of writing something, then I split up with my girlfriend at the time and found myself with lots of free time. So I started writing. It took a long, long time but now it's finally ready and I released it on Kindle at the weekend.
You can find it here - smarturl.it/TheRedCentre - you don't need a Kindle, just a Kindle App on whatever device you favour*.
I would like you to buy it. But not out of a feeling of pity or solidarity for a fellow Town fan. Buy it because it's a really good book (no time for false modesty). Buy it because you've been to Australia and you want to reminisce, or you've never been and would like to know what it's like.
Buy it because the nights are drawing in and you want a bit of escapism, because you don't want to think about scraping the ice off your car in a morning or why we haven't signed a striker (on an endless loop). Buy it because you want to day dream about swimming with whale sharks in the Indian Ocean, about kangaroo hunts and moonlit beaches, about philosophising under shooting stars and the milky way. You want to day dream about escaping bush fires and vigilantes, and about what life in the Australian outback is really like. The characters and the tensions and the conflict.
Buy it because it will make you think, it will make you laugh, and it might just make you cry. Buy it because the book will be continued, in your mind.
The blurb for the book is as follows: "Rob Noonan is in Australia chasing an obsession, the ghost of a memory that has entranced his family for a hundred years. Rob’s journey takes him from lotus eaters in East Coast pleasure domes to the rootless drifters in small town Australia, before hitting the long open roads of melted tarmac through the Never Never, where a vigilante stalks the baked clay of an isolated cattle station.
This is The Red Centre, where legends and myths grow far from the rule of law, warped by the unforgiving southern sun. Rob will be taken to the edge of his endurance and finds that his salvation comes with devastating consequences."
I've also set up a writer's Facebook page here which has a bit of information: facebook.com/jonnyheyhoewriter
It is Town related as there is a Town reference in the book (and will be more in the sequel). If the admins have to move it to off-topic so be it, but we don't have a game for nearly 2 weeks so if you could leave it on for a bit that would really mean a big deal.
Begging over, thanks for reading if you got this far!
* Some Apple devices don't allow you to buy it through the app as Apple take too big a cut, so you have to buy it in the Amazon store and then sync it to your Kindle.

Will it make my penis bigger? Only if you dangle it off the end with a fishing hook.

I'm afraid with that title a good number on here will assume it's a homage to Jeremy Corbyn, who not only has the nerve not to wear a tie, but shockingly was seen not to sing the national anthem, something I know we all do to attention every night before bed. Best of luck with the book.

Serious question(s) - how does Kindle Unlimited work as an author? Do you get a choice whether a book's put on it? Do you get a fixed fee per loan? Is it pretty derisory, the same way as a lot of musicians claim Spotify is?

I agree about Lee Clarke. Anyone else want to post a commercial advert in Talk of the Town?

Did you come across any decent left backs while you were out there researching it?

Will it make my penis bigger? There's a bit of filth in it, if that's what you're into.

Is it pretty derisory, the same way as a lot of musicians claim Spotify is? They are rather sketchy on the details of royalty payments for Kindle Unlimited. I'm guessing it's not going to be retirement money. I opted to enroll the book in Kindle Select, which means that you get some marketing promotion and access to a fund of something like $6m - I think this is the royalties that come from Kindle Unlimited, but it's not clear.

So.....is it anything like Wake in Fright? I've never heard of that film. Just had a look and it sounds like there are some similarities, particularly the kangaroo hunt. Only one way of finding out

As a bit of a traditionalist, is it available in Hardback or Paperback? Unfortunately not. I spent about a year approaching agents and publishers and got nowhere. It's an incredibly tough market to crack without contacts. So I decided to release it myself on Kindle. It's a good way of getting it out there while I work on my next book, it just means you need to spend a lot of time ensuring that it's going to be right. I work in advertising so have done a lot of proof-reading in my time, and I had a real stroke of luck in a friend's mum being an editor, so she read through it as well.

A quick glance at the few chapters shown on Amazon gave a favourable impression of your writing style.
And; you already have one positive review which must be encouraging (unless that was your better half?)
I stopped reading fiction about thirty years ago or I would have been good for a couple of quid, and I'm fairly sure that it isn't the sort of novel that my gaffer reads.
Good luck with sales of the book, it must take a lot of dedication (as well as skill and imagination) to see a project like that through.

Pity those couple of chapters couldn't tempt you out of 'retirement' The review was from the mother of a guy I used to play football with, she's an editor and kindly proof-read the book before I released it. That was an absolute god send.

First up, massive respect for completing it. How many people have started to write a novel but never completed it? It's what the swanky notebook industry is entirely dependent on. Writer workshops are full of people in love with the idea of being a writer, but unwilling to put in the hard graft and unglamorous work to actually be one. I bet not writing a book / leaving a body of work is one of people's biggest regrets. So, you should be proud.
Also, I'm a Kindle Unlimited subscriber. If I "borrow" your book, what does that mean to you V. buying it. Don't have to give pound note specifics, I'm just interested as to how many borrows equate to a purchase.

Thanks a lot, it's quite a personal story for me so I was going to complete it no matter what. I took a bit of time out of work after taking redundancy a few years ago to concentrate on it and without that time spent trying to develop my skills I don't know if I would have been able to do the story justice. As I understand it, there is a pot of money ($6m or $11m, or something) allocated to all Kindle authors for Kindle Unlimited, and you get a percentage based on how many full pages people read. So I have no idea at the minute how that will pan out, I should get a report at the end of the month. Buying it is better for my sales and will push me up the rankings, whereas I don't think people reading pages improves your ranking.
