The players don't really care these days though do they? Years of failure and negative press and the strength of the premier league and champions league has made playing for England at worst a bind and at best 3rd priority. Players don't care? Don't buy that at all. When was the last time you saw Rooney pull out of the squad when we've had a meaningless friendly? Or play Shite Marino? Ashley Cole, when did he ever blob? Played at Arsenal and Chelsea on mega money but I can't ever remember him missing an England game. Cahill? The Ox? Milner? All England players donate their England wage to charity as well. The players care.

FA should get a transfer fund of £100m together and establish a new England team in the Championship...give them 4 seasons to get established, make them exempt from relegation and then put them up into the next qualifying tournament as "England", with a maximum of 4 players called up from outside this setup, one of whom must be a keeper.

Played 9 won 9 and folk still moaning!! Then they are the ones wondering why the players don't enjoy playing for England. We lose, we're shit and should be hammering everyone cos we are England and no other country has the right to beat us. We win every game and every team we are playing are shit and it's to be expected! Honestly don't know what some folk want/expect when it comes to England?

Perspective should be drawn from International team's performances far and wide, rather than on individual players and their salaries alone. England are the only team to win up in qualifying, which is impressive however you look at it. Will we win it? Doubt it. But that is hardly underachieving. We haven't looked like losing, or even conceding many goals, something that to me is a huge change for England.IMO We are close to doing well. We do at least as well as we should do 9 times out of 10. Our problem is that we've not had that extra bit required to win it. The bit can be luck or genius, but either way it's not been near us since '66. 2002 epitomizes it; David "can't jump' Seaman. Sorry but beating Switzerland and Slovenia and other minnows isn't really impressive. In fact what England needed was a really tough qualifying group not what they had. This campaign doesn't prepare them at all for facing any tier one sides and like recent tournaments we'll be surprised how good they are and fail. Why even is Hodgson still in the job after that debacle in the last World Cup. The team was utterly inept in all areas of the field. Winning so many games in a row, in a sport where very little splits the best from the worst, is impressive. No one else has managed it. Look at: Portugal v Albania Netherlands vs Iceland Slovakia vs Spain Ireland vs Germany (twice) Bulgaria vs Italy Seems as though you are clinging onto England's WC performance rather than looking at this qualification period by its own merit. England get easier groups because they win an awful lot of games and are seeded because of it. England have earned this right, not fallen upon it. It's evident you dislike Hodgson, which of course is fine, but that seems be clouding your view on England's achievement of nine wins from nine. We've also drawn away in Italy in this time, beaten Scotland too. The only result maybe below par was the draw in Eire but then Germany struggled there too.

Still England though, aren't we? It's not the same as your club though Ben, well it certainly isn't for me. I certainly wasn't bothered about watching the game last night, and its been a good few years since I felt anything like passionate about England. However, if you offered me another 5 years in the Championship for Town at the cost of England not even qualifying for (say) the next 4 tournaments I would take it without hesitation. Town are in my blood and my heart, England, well I support them "because I'm English", although I am a quarter Welsh and a quarter Irish, which will help to spread my allegiance a bit in France. But always UTT I tend to agree with you Macjinx , there was a time when I would never miss an England game but I seem to have become very apathetic over the last few years . A team like like Estonia will inevitably play a defensive game which is not generally that entertaining. I am not having a dig at Estonia especially as a lot of teams when playing England at Wembley will play a similar system but these type of games just follow a similar pattern and I think a lot of fans become disinterested . I missed the game last night and listened to music and supped cheap cider instead !

Watch the start of the Estonia game again, they attacked us from the off. We got the ball off them and they had 6 or 7 players in our half. They started off having a proper go. After that we pushed and pushed them back, Estonia played a defensive game because they were forced to. Same when Town sit back, because they are forced back.

Estonia really weren't that good but they had a go. They just got pushed further and further back.
That said, they did create a few attacking moves also.

Glad it wasn't only me who thought England played very well in the main, aside from bit of wayward finishing thought they looked good and energetic against stubborn opponents. Also thought the commentary team and Studio Pundits were really harsh on an enthusiastic performance and a 9th victory on the trot in qualifying. As we all know they have got to do it when it counts next year in France but they couldn't do anything about that on a Friday night in October a year before.

Its not about qualification in the end. Its about the tournaments themselves. If you think we expect too much then you need to see and read the press in Italy and Spain and Germany. The Dutch are really getting pasted by their own and they have done better than us in virtually all tournaments than us since 1966...We are not alone in asking for more from our footballers and remember how excited the country got when we last reached a semi final? ?? Do we really ask too much?

Wales need to enjoy this moment whilst they can. I predict that they won't win a game in the Finals. They have reverted to type - couldn't beat the mighty power that is Israel and lost to Bosnia. Just shows what a farce the FIFA rankings are.

Not one of them stands a chance of winning it. Great achievement by NI but a futile one.
