They've only just got electricity in Accrington haven't they so I doubt there'll be anyone about who'll know what to do

Good effort really. Less hassle than a pitch invasion. I'm amazed nobody thought of that before when you're about to lose a play-off semi.

2nd club missing out on the final day of the season not getting the promotion they deserve. There has to be a fairer way to do these play-offs. I agree with what people said before which is similar to Scotland: 5th v 6th Winner v 4th Winner v 3rd
Give 3rd place a real advantage for being the 3rd best team in the league.

Walsall as well, finished 3rd after missing out on the final day on goal difference, they're almost certain to miss out on Wembley.

What if the 3rd placed team misses out on the 3rd place at the last game of the season then? would be the same thing really... I think it is good as it is, it's never going to be "fair" unless we remove the play-offs completely, which would take away a lot of the excitement etc. And even then you could argue that a team could miss out on promotion in the last game. The regular season is 46 games not 45.

That pitch invasion was brilliant. Could see how much of a close knit club they are, it was like all the players and fans knew each other. Think Lyle Taylor took a photo with every single fan
In this day of stupid wages and massive egos, it's good to see there are still some proper clubs out there doing well

I guess there are two sides of the coin here but I like the way it is now. It adds something for teams in the mid-table and bottom half that if you just get to top-6 you have a really good chance, the top-teams would probably disagree with that argument though...

The way it is now, there's no difference between finishing 3rd or 6th as you have to play home and away to reach the final wherever you finish. On the other hand, it is better to finish higher if you change it to 5th v 6th, 4th v Winner of 5/6 and 3rd v Winner of 4/5/6. 3rd qualifies automatically for the Wembley final. 4th has to win 1 home match to get to the final. 5th has to win 1 home and 1 away match to get to the final. 6th has to play 2 away matches to get to the final.

Scrap the play offs. Bring in the 19th place promotion system.

Yeah exactly. Plus you often get the 6th placed team being the in-form team making a late dash and it can actually be a disadvantage playing them.

After thinking about this a little more...
Tbh the reason the play-offs exist is probably to make more teams involved and to get the final games more exciting, plus to earn more money. If we were to make it as fair as possible we could aswell just scrap the play-offs completely. To make it more complicated by making the 4th play the 5th and then the 3rd etc is not just going to confuse people but it's also still going to be a bit unfair as with that logic the 3rd team have already showed that they are the 3rd best team in the league and should be promoted.
Edit: I still think that the play-offs are good as they are though

The play offs are the best thing about the football league. 3rd placed clubs are entitled to nothing. You lot will be saying that only Premier League clubs should be allowed to play in the FA Cup next.

All that's being suggested is assuming the play-offs aren't scrapped, teams are given an incentive to finish as high up as they can in the top 6. Let's say with 2 games to go, 3rd to 6th are separated by 6 points and they're all guaranteed to finish no higher than 3rd or lower than 6th. With the system as it is, none of those teams have anything to play for in the last 2 games. There's no incentive for the 6th placed team to try and finish 3rd as they'll still have to play a home and away tie regardless. (This year's play-offs have shown that playing the lowest ranked team doesn't offer an advantage, and playing at home in the second leg offers no discernible advantage either). If however they know that the 3rd placed team goes straight to Wembley but 6th has to win 2 away games to get there, they'll try and do everything to finish 3rd. Alternatively, if a team has a chance of going up automatically on the final day but they fail and finish 3rd, at least there's a decent consolation.

If only all these 3rd placed teams had been told the rules at the start of the season maybe it wouldn't be so controversial.

Just because every team knows the rules at the start of the season, doesn't mean they're necessarily the best rules. There's no reason why an amendment shouldn't/can't be at the very least considered.

Leave it as it is. We've been promoted after finishing 5th and we've missed out after finishing 3rd. You win some and you lose some, it's all part of the game.
This season we comfortably stayed up on 51 points and 3 years ago we almost went down on 58. That would have been harsh but perfectly fair. If you don't like the system just do a Leicester and then there's no argument!

Word of sympathy for Accrington, so close to automatic promotion, only team I believe to score in every home game until the final game against Stevenage and so close to taking the tie to penalties last night. Operating on a very small budget a Wembley trip would have been very welcome to them. Better luck next time around.

The play offs do not "take away" promotion from the third place team. They were introduced to add a promotion place onto the top two. If they were scrapped it would revert to that. I liked the initial system where the third bottom team had the right to defend its higher division status

Sympathy for Accrington, but delighted for Wimbledon. The dream for a lot of neutral football fans would be to see them in the same division as MK, beat them and finish above them.

Next 4 teams get entered into a mini league. Every club was aware of this at the start of the season. What is so hard to understand? Start making concessions for the 3rd placed team and the 7th placed side and 22nd placed side will start wanting similar treatment. Where will it end?

If I remember correctly 3rd bottom of the league above were originally included in the play offs to give them a chance to stop up Sent from my SM-G900F using proboards
