I was wondering under what circumstances Ian Greaves, the last manager to get us to the top flight, left the club.
I'm a little too young to remember.

Just before my time but having finished bottom of Div 1 he then saw Town finish next to bottom and relegated from Div 2 the next season and was in charge for the whole of 73/74 for a mid table finish for the first time in Div 3, as Kindo said above he resigned in June 1974, just after Town's juniors played Spurs in the youth Cup Final.
A sign of how football has changed, no manager would survive 2 successive relegations now, he took over a very decent Bolton team that included Peter Reid and future Town players Paul Jones, Sam Allerdyce and Neil McNab who put 4th Div Town out of the FA Cup in 75/76. I seem to remember he ended at Mansfield who Town played in the Milk / League Cup in 83/84 but I could be wrong ( sure MT will know for definite)

Four doors further along lived Trevor Cherry's sister and that's who took me to my first games.

Just seen your wiki link, I knew he was a Man Utd player but not about missing the Munich flight and didn't realise he joined Bolton with Armfield in charge, I was at the Bolton Cup game and both legs of the Mansfield ones.

Well think yourself a lucky man to be as old as you are , If you were about 7 years younger Trevor cherry,s sister could have taken you somewhere much worse.

How does the saying go, Lies, damn lies and statistics. That record "proves" he was a bad manager, in the same way Big Sam must be a genius for never being relegated.

To say he was a bad manager is completely wrong in my view. He got us promoted on a shoe string and had nothing to spend. Town's miserliness and lack of investment over the great side is well known. He did a great job at Bolton. Hard to keep said clubs in the First Division.

Asked for money to stay up. Told none available. Resigned.
He was a good man. Larger than life character, did a good job at Bolton and had a genuine Lowry hanging in his office. Cool!
Never quite made it as a player at United but certainly made up for it as a manager .... and a man.

Frank Drabble a lifelong Town fan became chairman in the summer of 1968 & then appointed Greaves manager, they both resigned in the summer of 1974, not sure why this was, but, he showed great loyalty to Greaves through out his tenure, DH said of Drabble 'he was someone to aspire too' when he died in 2011....you certainly did that Dean!

When we were in the first division he wanted to sign Alan Gowling to play alongside Frank. The Board wouldn't give him the money and we only signed AG when Frank left to join Leicester. Greaves finally got his wish, but only after leaving us to take over at Bolton. He was a good manager, but the penny pinching Board let him down here, in much the same way as they did to Bill Shankly in years gone by. We are so lucky to have Deano now

I know her husband Gerry (who managed Emley and Ashton) and son Paul (who went on to manage Brighouse Town). A proper footballing family. I didn't find out Christine was Ian's daughter until I was quite a bit older though.
