I was there - Even as a kid, it was heartbreaking to see Tony wheeled out in his chair at half time. With the money that is awash in the game for today's players there shouldn't be much need for these money raising testimonials in the future.

Go on then Oti - Oh wise one, can you tell me which 2 of those kids had the best goals per game ratio at Town?

Yes, I was in the Cowshed that evening. I think O'Callaghan scored 5 or 6 but I mainly remember the Town fans slowly singing "Fuck off McQueen". Those were the days

Bob Mountain only played once and didn't score - Are you thinking of Bob Mountford? The top 2 were Goldthorpe followed by Bielby (on England's bench that day)

I vaguely remember this. It was an awful night with rain lashing down. There was a pretty decent crowd for such a night as far as 1970s attendances went anyway. About 9500 I think. There were rumours at school all day that Bradford and Leeds were coming down to start some trouble but I did not see anything. The game was pretty good too with Frankie Worthington getting the biggest cheer from Town fans in the Cowshed. I remember Jack Charlton getting booed and as for Gordon McQueen did he not appear in some g-string thing the next day in the newspaper? We hated him for his Leeds connections but in the end he left them in the mire after fighting with David Harvey in the goalmouth against Man City in the cup. He was a turncoat and right.
Felt sorry for Tony Leighton on the night too as he was wheeled out to the centre circle. I remember thinking how terrible it was for anyone especially an ex-professional footballer to be ending his days in that way. I never saw him play for Town but I know he was a decent player.
Yep those days we're bleak. Just before Buxton and losing home games to the likes of Southport, Workington, Cambridge Utd, Hereford, Darlington, Doncaster Rovers on the telly and York. It was indeed hard being a Town fan then.

I went to the game. I was still a mere kid at the time. My elder brother took me. He remembered Tony Leighton from the sixties. I recall a decent crowd, but not much about the game. People in the crowd being happy to 'see some decent laikers for once'

He was scoring almost a goal a game....not a tall lad but put himself about. Mountford was a donkey...a big lump of a centre forward who was good with the head.

I remember the ref too, Mr Trelford Mills. You would! No doubt you have his stopwatch engraved and a signed photo of the linesmen

I can remember Frankie scoring a goal at the cowshed end of the pitch in a testimonial/charity match, could it have been this one? He had 2 bites of the cherry ending in a volleyed goal high into the net, can remember thegoal but nowt else!

This was my first ever Town game. I was 7 years old. I remember sitting up in the stand with my old man and older brother and being transfixed by the beautiful green baize under the floodlights. Also remember it was a draw 2-2 and Lloyd Maitland scored two cracking goals into the open end. I think we were 2-0 down and came back to 2-2 but I may be wrong as it's so long ago!

Yes probably the most memorable non competitive game I've been to. Tony used to live nearby in Roberttown & I went to school with his youngest daughter. What a fantastic line up it was.

How do you remember this stuff? I cannot remember who we played last month. I cannot remember what I had for lunch yesterday. Some days, I forget my own name. I cannot remember the last time I made love (and I'm prolific at the old love-making game, usually by myself).
And here's you lot, talking about youth players from nearly 50 years ago!
