no...not the junkie. When i was a lad it was all Frankie but i recall two guys in the mill telling me Doherty was our finest ever player. Mind you...i knew and old boy who saw Alex Jackson and he said he was something else. Here is a short clip of Doherty.

That reminds me of a discussion (mid-sixties) when I was an apprentice at a well-known Tractor manufacturer (guess) of this parish. I was extolling the virtues of the BEST footballer ever to lace a pair of boots and one of the old boys said: "Eee lad he isn't even the best Irish footballer." I was forced to admit that I'd niver heard of the great Peter. The confidence of youth.....
Qualifying as an old boy myself now though - and having seen dozens of great players - I still haven't seen anyone better than the BEST.
Great movie btw - thanks.

I think he was my dad's favourite Town player in those post war years because he never stopped talking about him. I must have seen him play plenty times but I can't remember him now. My dad idolised Alex Jackson as well and who besides scoring 70 goals for Town also scored a hat-trick for the Scottish team known as "The Wembley Wizards" when they beat England 5-1 in 1928.

I'm giving oti the benefit of the doubt here as I'm certain that he knew it was Peter, but using the name "Pete Doherty" as a thread title would attract those of a musical persuasion, hence his opening line.

Before you crown Doherty as our best ever player you need to consider that back in 1946 the standard of professional football was absolute garbage.

Back in my school days in the 70's the old blokes said that Alex Jackson was the best ever at Town. I don't know whether or not everybody saw it but I put a superb article about Alex Jackson on the first page of the "gay footballer" thread. If anybody hasn't read it, I would strongly advise you to do so.

“When all the business had been done, Chapman and my father went to the only pub in town to seal the contract with a nice glass of Scotch.” Remember reading that a few years ago and reflecting how the business side of the game has changed... Thanks for the reminder.
BTW: I see that we have another "Herbert" in our midst, is this the first one that has been associated with the club since the days of the great man?
