Or the time he got a hat trick against us for York City on bonfire night. I didn't think he got 3. But I was more bothered that he got Tom Cowan sent off that game. That was it! Seem to remember him getting amongst the goals but perhaps not all three. Warnock was after signing him at the time. Was a goal machine that season. A little ovrr the hill when he eventually came.

After the thread I posted about people's favourite striker, it got me thinking about 2nd strikers who chipped in alongside more prominent goalscorers. Andy Payton, Lee Novak and Ronnie Jepson spring to mind. Anyone got any other mentions? I had actually forgot about Payton but he did bag a few goals alongside Stewart, he was even our top goalscorer one season. How are we defining "2nd striker"? Only, Payton's only positive contribution was goals. To me, a 2nd striker is one whose role is primarily creative or one whose role is primarily that of a battering ram/holding the ball up. Payton was certainly not that.

Stewart was the main man, but Clyde chipped in with his fair share as well. His hat-trick against Palace was one of the best I've seen I'll never forget that game.. What a way to finish your hattrick with an overhead kick!

Payton was certainly not that. I was meaning anyone who was playing upfront in a 2 really. Obviously the less prolific goalscorer but someone who grabbed goals nonetheless. A good example of a 2nd striker for me would be Sheringham when he played upfront with Shearer. I know what you mean though and your definition is probably a better way to describe a 2nd striker in the historical sense.

What was it about him you didn't like? Maybe I missed something? Did you miss the broad grin on his face after he scored in a 1-5 defeat at Middlesbrough? Didn't give a shit about the team, just in it for himself. I was about 10 years old when Payton was at Town so wouldn't have been paying attention to details like that. Thanks for explaining though, the reply is appreciated.

Didn't give a shit about the team, just in it for himself. I've watched the highlights of that. He scored when we were 5-0 down. He didn't have a grin on his face at that moment - but he absolutely WAS that sort of a player. The number of attacks of ours he broke down simply by running miles offside or taking a wild punt when better options were available. Andy Payton didn't play for Huddersfield Town. Andy Payton played for Andy Payton. As an aside, I was at that game in Middlesbrough. 7 or 8 players you could have interchanged between the sides with very little difference, but Ravanelli & Emerson were superb that day and Juninho really was something else. One of the best performances I've seen live. Up there with Ian Wright when Arsenal battered us at Leeds Road & Matt Le Tissier taking Le Pissier at The Dell.

Ok you can maybe take out broad grin, but there was definitely a smug expression on his face. One other thing from that game at Middlesbrough, many home fans later commented that we brought the best away support they had seen all season. They were right, we even gave them a blast of "you're not singing anymore" when we pulled it back to 1-5.

We signed Payton to partner Marcus Stewart and I said at the time a big strong centre forward would have been a better option. Wayne Allison joined later and proved my point. He didn't score as often as Payton, but we got much more from Marcus when they teamed up. Shame we never had Boothy and Stewart together, now that would have been special!

Was Merson in that Boro side ? Or was it later that he played for them and ran the show with ease against us ?

I think Merson arrived a year or two after that.

I saw Gordon Tucker play for HTFC when I was about 8 or 9. I know he was shit, but only because everyone said he was. I can't actually remember a damn thing about him. Just being at a football match at that age is quite an overwhelming (in a good way) experience. Very few kids have much of an understanding of the game (& why should they? - it's just to be enjoyed).
