Since the closure of The Canalside to all fans. Anybody got any alternative suggestions for before and after games. Real ale establishments would be best if possible...๐บ๐

What's the Peacock like nowadays? Genuine Q, used to drink in there regularly, but that's going back nearly 30yrs... It was the good old ICI club over the road as well back then, for a game of snooker...

Loads of good places to drink in the Town Centre on a Matchday,
Not sure about places that are more suitable for children though.

If you want a quick pint of ordinary, ie Fosters, Carlsberg, Strongbow, think the bitter is John Smiths(?), itโs fine. If youโre after a craft ale, forget it.

Are craft ales just bottles of lager with a premium price as opposed to real ales which are handpumped beers? or are they the same but a different name? PS I'm sure the Peacock does have some handpumped stuff

TBF, don't think the Peacock has ever dressed itself up to be anything than the ordinary. Not that much local footfall round there, think they used to do most of their trade lunchtimes, but as said, I'm coming at this from a long time back. Had a pint in the pub at the top of Dalton before a home game last yr, it was cheap but shite...

It was the good old ICI club over the road as well back then, for a game of snooker... Used to go in Peacock every match until we got promoted and parking became impossible after 1.30pm. It was pretty fair for a pre-post match pint and growler, far from the dive many would have you believe it was.

I can drink anything...and i mean anything. However, 7 years in Poland means bottled beers and as a tight Yorshireman that is a ยฃ2.70 bottle of Newky Brown ale in the Vulcan.

It was always especially busy on Fridays. I suspect there were some unsafe workplaces on Friday afternoons. The forklift driver at our place usually managed to polish off 4 or 5 pints in his lunch hour. Big lad he was though!

Is that actually quoting someone, or the fact you've just had an early morning accident in bed?

Is that actually quoting someone, or the fact you've just had an early morning accident in bed? Newcastle Brown... The worst drink of all. Sure as students we all had a few bottles cos it was cheap, but no grown person would drink it by choice surely?

The rule used to be that you drank it from a half pint glass that you kept topping up, one of those low goblet style glasses.

Similarly, the Gas Club is alright and both are close enough to the ground to be able to order a drink 20 minutes before kick off! Some of our more discerning, humourous and handsome DATM posters drink in The Peacock.

Not to mention World Championship sportsmen.
