Today sees the "curtainraiser" to the new season open with the traditional Community Shield game at Wembley. Well that's how some people see it. Others have got their season already underway and couldn't give a damn. For a competition that's been around for so long it's certainly had its critics over the years. Even this year Liverpool's manager has asked if the shield is even worth winning. He will of course be facing his old rival Pep Guardiola and they have experience of meeting up in such a competition (German Super Cup) in years gone by i.e 2013, 2014 when Klopp was victorious on both occasions. The history of the Charity Shield is a somewhat bumpy one with the format of the competition changing over the years. Different venues, different qualifying modus etc. Some teams even refused to take part in the early 1970s obviously having better things to do on that particular day! So, is it a pre-season friendly, or a trophy well worth winning?

For these two teams, I think it sets a season marker.
Pep, in his press conference this week, said they won four domestic trophies last season, so he obviously includes it.
It’s viewed as a curtain raiser friendly but I think it’s a tone setter.

Although I do like the way the game proceeds are distributed to all clubs who took part in the FA cup from the first round onwards, to give to whichever charity they please. Taken from Wiki: "Organised by the FA, proceeds from the game are distributed to community initiatives and charities around the country. Revenue from the gate receipts and match programme sales is distributed to the 124 clubs who competed in The FA Cup from the First Round onwards, for onward distribution to charities and projects of their choice, while the remainder is distributed to the FA's national charity partners. The fixture was first played in the 1908–09 season, replacing the Sheriff of London Charity Shield." Can't say there's been many inspiring games, and I couldn't name you the past 5 winners, but who can ever forget the Charity Shield of 1974, when an unhappy Leeds team was led out by Brian Clough, and Liverpool by Bill Shankley?
