For me, the first thing the new man has to do is get back to defending properly at set pieces.
We have for a while, going back to Wagner, taken this ridiculous high line of defence which is so easy to penetrate. Any team watching us knows that they just have to curl a ball behind the back four and have runners from deep. We get caught out virtually every attacking free kick and are lucky to have not conceded more.
The first goal last night was like a schoolboy game, they had 4 or 5 men in the box, none of whom were marked.
For a team built very much on defending for the last couple we seem to have lost all the basics. |
