My Facebook memories has just flashed up 10 years ago today I was at the Don Valley Stadium to watch us play Rotherham in the JPT whilst it’s not much of a journey I was one of the fewer number to go to Darlington away on the coldest night I ever remember at football, I started watching us in 1988 a mascot in 1989 courtesy of being a ‘young terrier’ in the group called Dudley Lewis over 1000 games in 30 years.... a period of 250 consecutive games which included every minute of our centenary season, the only time I take very little interest is pre season.
I would say last season that I went to less games February to May than at any period from maybe 1993 when I probably started going to away games... yet following the defeat against Derby that feeling of being a football fan (a proper one kicked in) it’s almost the worst we get the more I want to watch us.
I have a young baby we are far from financially stable due to my absolute stupidity over the last 12-18 months but I felt the need to pay over £200 to watch Town at QPR, this included late purchased train tickets, I went on my own it’s something I’ve always been happy to do almost prefer.
Last year my away attendance decline was down to me thinking the club have given up so I may as well games felt like pre season they weren’t competitive as they meant nothing it was hard to drag myself to home games that were pre paid for. We are a day out of August and I already feel the same but more to do with off field than on the field I feel like off it we have given up, I don’t think I should be entitled to know everything and the club is probably suffering for being too open in recent times that we expect it to continue but I do feel my intelligence is being insulted.
Many people seemed relieved at our approach in the premier league using Bolton as a blue print that we didn’t want to follow, I don’t think there is a club more similar to us in Bolton from history to Fanbase but there premier league stay included players being signed that were top 100 in the world (Djorkaeff and Okacha) and the income from Bolton’s premier league stay even allowing for inflation in the game (transfer fees and wages) was significantly less than ours, we all know the blue print that should of been followed we didn’t we perhaps chose not to follow it but Burnley are again very similar to us and Bolton.
It’s all ok though, because DH was a fan and PH was a fan, this is not about dick measuring but I never remember seeing either during the worst time as a town fan or the above mentioned games (worst by virtue of league standing this is the worst I have ever felt because I feel short changed) they are though both clearly fans (how big doesn’t really matter) but they are also businessmen, DH clearly decided that there are more important things in football I have had 3 lengthy conversations with him in my life the first one at Stockport away we played Lukas J up front and I was sat next to Victor Anichebe one side and Dean on the other, I was obviously a bit younger than today and relatively star struck but made it known to Dean I was a town fan and we had such a detailed discussion, he made me feel as a single fan a massive part of the club, he delivered 2 of the 3 greatest feelings I have ever had in life..... promotion at Wembley, survival at Chelsea and the birth of my daughter (clearly number 1) that’s the biggest indication of how much I care about town and I have loved a far from boring and sheltered life and have had other good non related football moments too.
I saw and spoke to DH twice in the last 2 years once at the player of the year awards of the survival season he was clearly pre occupied but unlike at Stockport he was now more famous than the players and everyone wants to speak to him to discuss all matters Town I purposely chose a different subject but he was vacant and pre occupied, he clearly wasn’t enjoying the premier league ride as much as me who was just a fan did, the next time was a lunch with him and Wagner, again he was pre occupied and it was clear to me he wasn’t well and he has undoubtedly made the right choice for him and his family but it appears right now to be a rank bad one for HTAFC.
His retained involvement should still offer some refuge, if I’m as angry and upset as I can only imagine that he is more so.... particularly when his legacy is being questioned, the counter arguments are that he has taken his money back, he was prepared to lose and exposed to significant personal loses prior to premier league so I feel that he is entitled and others will suggest that he chose PH who is seemingly not delivering what was promised this may be all part of a the plan it may be a total deviation there maybe internal problems the fact is we don’t know but I’m sure DH will be hurting it’s just whether he has that fire back which was apparent at Stockport but non existent the last two times I saw him.
DH has clearly made mistakes last couple of years but he has clearly built up credit, the Rickie lambert mistake is long forgotten too.... PH had no credit and made bold statements, over promised and has so far undelivered he may of been dealt a bad hand but he chose it and I don’t want to get personal and have no question about his finances but certainly do disagree about the explanations regards the clubs money.... but the single statement that has annoyed me most is he was up until midnight every night working..... your the chairman of a great football institution so you should be up until midnight I’m up until far later getting annoyed and how I can articulate my frustration and this largely pointless ramble is the best I can do.

I was at both Rotherham too, however I think he’s on about Darlo with the few fans. Rotherham there were more away than home fans on both occasions If he means Darlington in JPT I was there too. That’s how it reads but there’s a bit more to what he’s wrote Art than how many Town fans were at X, Y and Z place.

What do you consider an extremely healthy away following? As the entire attendance was under 2k at Darlington I think you will struggle to convince me it was an extremely healthy away following.
