Me and my lad went down to watch the nearest team to where we live, Guiseley FC, play York City in the Northern Conference this evening. It was a very entertaining 0-0 watched by almost 2000. What amazed us both though was the commitment shown by both teams and the free flowing football including lots of decent crosses into the danger area. There was no passing it sideways from one side of the pitch to the other without actually moving forward, no beating of a man to only then never put a cross in, no half hearted performances and definitely no sign of anyone rolling around feigning injury. The icing on the cake were the pop up bars in operation within the ground (no long queues whenever I looked either) that did a roaring trade. Altogether made a very refreshing change from some of the dross we’d witnessed since the turn of the year. Some of our players would have learnt a lesson or 3. Wonder if the management team at Guiseley are up for a new challenge? 😉

The game finished 0-0. How does that solve our lack of goal scoring issue?

The game finished 0-0. How does that solve our lack of goal scoring issue? True. But it’s not just our lack of scoring that’s causing problems, there’s the other issue of letting them in at the other end! Think my post was more that it was good to go watch a game of football without really being bothered who won but coming away pleasantly surprised just how end to end the game was and how much attacking intent both showed. The standard was also far better than I thought it would be as I’d gone down expecting a bit of a slug fest. My son actually commented that both teams would provide a stern test for us presently based on that showing and I struggled to disagree. FWIW, the Guiseley centre forward is the current league’s top scorer on (I think?) 9 in 9 and both teams are top 6 in their league.

The game finished 0-0. How does that solve our lack of goal scoring issue? Finish every game from now 0-0 and we wouldn’t be relegated.

Watch Brighouse Town a bit, and our main striker Aaron Martin who joined Guiseley this season is grabbing a few goals for them. I think he scored 7 from the first 4 games or something. Good player.

Historically not, but it would have been enough in 4 of the last 5 seasons. I THINK there may be a shift change in the Championship in last few years as it has become almost like a Premier League 2....there usually now are 5 to 7 teams each season who are pretty decent across the season, and who know how to play out a win against the lesser teams. This takes points out of the table so you stay up with less...we are gradually moving away from that old “Championship is the best league as everyone can beat everyone” type position where historically it was only one or two runaway teams at the top, and everyone else was much of a muchness, anyone could beat anyone so the average points for relegation was increased. No idea if this is a fact, just what I’ve thought over recent years.
