Trying to put my finger on what happened and how to avoid this slide again.
When we got promoted, we largely kept the core of the promotion squad bar Mounie, Depoitre and Lossl (replacing Wells and Ward).
The Terrier spirit and momentum was carried by the majority of players. However, second season we then signed what can only be described as gutless mercenaries, with a couple of exceptions.
As we see now, Sheff Utd and Norwich have kept the core of their squad and are holding their own, albeit early doors.
Transitioning players, we have to make sure we have good men, not cowards who will walk at the first sign of adversity.
Let's start with a few good local lads who are passionate about the team and get the terrier spirit back.
Look at Hefele, not the best technically but he runs through doors and typifies that underdog spirit we had nurtured so well.
Keep the faith,
UTT

Eh? Hef was very comfortable on the ball. Probably more so than Schindler and certainly more so than Zanka.
Injury’s stopped him but regardless he just didn’t have the mobility/turn of pace over 5 to 10 yards to be a premier league defender nor did he counter that by being aerially dominant.

Look at Hefele, not the best technically but he runs through doors and typifies that underdog spirit we had nurtured so well. Keep the faith, UTT You can keep and it is easier to keep the majority of players the first season because you feel more affinity to them and they got you there so deserve more of a chance. Yes Sheff Utd and Norwich have done the same and made decent starts (as we did) but the second half of the first season we really struggled as the momentum disappeared as I'd imagine it will with them and it was obvious we needed signings in the second summer. I wouldn't say the signings we made were gutless mercenaries, I'd hardly describe Diakhaby and Mbenza as mercenaries considering they are at the beginning of their careers but considering their age and experience they should have been bonus signings. They should have been coming in to the side to add on to improvements and experience for players such as Hogg, Kachunga, VLP, Depoitre not being the improvements. Instead the spirit had inevitably dropped due to an already bad run and those players were coming to a side which was already struggling with the same faces and no more experience or quality added to it. The problem wasn't that we didn't sign enough players. Despite you pointing Norwich out they are already second bottom when this is the best time for the them to be picking up points and they'll be in big trouble when the run continues and the momentum they had drops off. Same with Sheff Utd and if they do manage to survive they'll both need to improve next summer so don't think they will be sticking with the players that got them there because they won't.

Signing the likes of Ince, Malone and Pritchard who had been consistent performers in the Championship adding to the mix of Lossl, Depoitre, Mounie and Zanka to me looked a clear way of a bit of forward planning to be a very good Championship team if we had come down in year 1.
In hindsight, if we had fallen at the first hurdle and come down as “plucky Huddersfield” I think we would have been better equipped to have been a stronger Championship Team.
Instead we went backwards with the strength of squad and came down as a perceived joke club with all momentum lost of the previous couple of years.
All hindsight though and who’s to say anything would have been any different - we’ll never know. It is what it is and we now need to address the slide, get back to winning some games and rebuilding a feel good factor over watching Town again as its all a bit “meh” at the moment.

The Root cause
Some could point at the fact that we had achieved promotion to the PL UNEXPECTEDLY. i.e. We had not built over several years a full squad of capable players. We even managed it with a negative goal difference ! The attempt to address that SM and LDP did not work and then no further attempt was made. You could point at Wagner for single handedly dismantling the Terrier spirit putting out an 11 with only 2 attackers in it. You might even blame the board for not intervening at this stage to ask why the we fear no foe attitude was dropped after all it wasn't getting results. You could say that whilst DH was in hospital with a focus on selling the club, those left in charge made a right pigs ear of it and proved unfit for purpose. Indeed you could say that everyone in charge at Town had no idea at all how to cope in the PL and when that is coupled with the small minded attitude of just being little old Huddersfield we were already destined to fail. You could blame the diahkby and mnbenza fiasco and equally the person responsible for bringing the here. We could have had a class striker with money these two cost !! You could say making no attempt to sign players in the Jan window signalled to those players trying their best to keep us up the club don't care why should we? After all we have seen that before when Marcus stewart was sold. Or you could take the overall view that actually we are just TINPOT the club have proved it in some style and really do belong in L1.
