It's a good job we never added a second tier to the Kilner. It will be less than half full for our games this time next year.
And yes I am large.

Thanks for posting. For the first time in a while I felt a small flicker of pride. Pride, that in my history of supporting my local team we have had some truly groundbreaking moments. Yeh, it's not great at the moment, but if it was - the great moments wouldn't be as special as they are.

A decent report albeit it inaccurate in relation to the attendance at the REM gig. Where they got 80,000 from is anybody's guess. At the time in 1996 it was said that the Eagles gig was the largest attendance at 36,000.

Fantastic, thanks for posting this. I remember being absolutely blown away when I first saw the artist impression drawings in the Examiner as a youngster. So much so that I cut it out and put it in a frame on my bedroom wall. I remember being a bit sceptical about how much it would resemble the picture in reality, but it was just about spot on (think the floodlights were intended to be on the trusses, but they caused too much glare in the corners or something). I love our stadium, and I think some Town fans don't always appreciate just how special it is.

At the time in 1996 it was said that the Eagles gig was the largest attendance at 36,000. Wasn't it over several nights? So total attendance of 80k? How times change, didn't the stadium originally cost £25 million (3 sides) and now we are building a training complex for £20 million. I fear that spurs stadium has made our design obsolete in regards to the amenities and we could do with a fresh look and some serious money spent on it to bring it up to date and have another successful 25 years.

Thanks for posting this - a really good innovation which at the time which, as a Kirklees ratepayer (whatever) I was not really very happy about. The fact that the concept has been copied and modified so many times is a tribute to the foresight of the sponsors of the project (especially the Council) as well as the architects who must have made themselves famous.
Having said that I STILL wonder how long it will be (if ever) before we (ratepayers) see any return for our investment?

The architect was Rod Sheard, of Populous.....an Aussie. He's also worked on Olympic stadia, and the new Wembley, amongst many major projects.
Aussie architect....Dutch current sponsors (Heineken)...a German our most successful recent manager.....lots of foreign players....and crap football.

My only dislike of the current stadium is that it's not enclosed. I like the fact that it isnt. I like seeing into the ground from outside and watching people walking away from inside with 20 mins to go. Gives it more old school ground.

Apart from the roof support and uninterrupted views its rubbish. Not enclosed....poor sounds. Seats too narrow...built with a whistle-down wind.....tiny, shite, dark concourses. Poor facilities. Slow turnstiles...the old ones. Outside all plastic. As for multi-use...when exactly? Give me Leeds Road all day.
The John Smith’s Stadium broke all the conventions of a football stadium as a cold, unwelcoming building offering little more than a plastic cup of tea and a pie on a dingy corridor

Spurs is a different demographic. It might bed in over a period of time, but it also smacks of the commercialisation of the game and the clubs intentions. The Galph is ok now its started to get a regular atmosphere and at least it has some history games wise. Much like how I think the Etihad probably is, the Spurs ground seems a bit homogenised. The only way they'll spend any sort of decent money on our ground (not that I think it's that bad), is with a long stay in the PL, a marked upturn in the local economy & some sort of HDone development alongside it.

Fantastic concourse, spacious wide seats and quaint pillars offering little obstruction.

Of course, step forward contrarian Otium ... Two sayings...."just because it is written down does not make it true". In typing that half pissed i have now forgotten the second one! Oh, "question everything, accept nothing". So it won and architecture award....i got a Colne Valley Road Safety Award in 1970. The stadium is nothing special.

Its a bit dated now and it was always a shame the corners weren't filled in. Think Bolton got the stadium we should have had. But it is massively better than leeds Road was in just about every aspect.
