Some of the most intelligent, erudite, well-read, articulate and sophisticated people I know would call you a c*** for saying that. I pity you. I really do. I don't care. I really don't.

Saying that to someone on a web forum, rather than after a comedy performance, is moronic. The conversation was becoming tedious and riddle with sanctimony, so I decided to entertain myself. Frankly, couldn't give a shiny shite if it amused you. Using the c word is moronic pal. Justifying the use of the word is the mark of an idiot. You carry on though. I absolutely detest the use of the C word but sadly I know I am in the minority.

Firstly, I acknowledge the hard work put in by Admins in overseeing this site. I think that the site has lost vibrancy and humour this week, since Nick’s ban. Having rejoined a year ago, I can’t remember a single time that Nick has been abusive to anyone, despite receiving many frankly abusive replies to his posts. I was often amused, sometimes bemused by his posts but certainly never offended by any of them. I see other posts from people using bad language and responses to posts that frankly are very offensive. We live to our own rules and personally I would never use offensive language on a public forum. It would appear to me that the best solution would of been ( if admins are able to do this) to block visibility of Nick’s posts to the people who have complained about him and allow him to continue to amuse and bemuse everyone else who see him ( including me ) as a source of entertainment and one who has splendid recollections of Town over the years. Even if that were possible, do you think the admins have the time and patience to apply and action such specific criteria, all because of the ramblings of one person. I'm not having a go at you in particular, but that point you've made there highlights why it's easier and more sensible just to stop the problem at root cause, as opposed to continually applying the same sticking plaster dozens of times, again and again and again. This is a FREE forum FFS, it gives us an out, allows us to vent if we're pissed off (generally 5 mins after a game ends at present). If this board wasn't administered & managed properly by folk giving up their free time to deal with middle aged idiots, I can almost guarantee you it would be in disarray & probably defunct within a few months. Better to have the odd sacrificial lamb to keep it going for the majority. Ironic that some calling for Nicks reinstatement would call me a snowflake or such like when discussing other topics, yet you're getting all het up about a bloke who's been banned, but who seemingly has another account where he posts without all the nonsense. BTW, I've never complained about Nick. Had a mild pop at him in response many a time and taken the piss occasionally, but never over-stepped the mark.

This thread has been derailed by an admin acting as untouchable, and ignoring perfectly rational points, in order to justify decisions admins have made and will continue to do so.
I quite like the word c***, but if I called anyone it I'd expect them to smash my face in, much as I would (try) if someone called me it - whether they were being ironic, offensive, or humorous.
Over the last page or so there's at least two or three reportable incidents, but frankly I'm not that chuffing sad to do so.
It's turned into a dick-swinging contest and to be honest it's unbecoming of (from experience) decent people.
Shame on the whole scenario and that Nick has been banned through the petty small-mindedness of some adults.
p.s. townre must surely tick many of the boxes that Nick has over the years - maybe they're the same person, or related?

Unfortunately that's the case. Shouldn't be used at all, but in particular on a forum where children could potentially read it's use.

Not that it makes much of a difference, there won’t be a child in the country that doesn’t have the full vocabulary before they finish school.

Anybody that does is displaying an unwelcome characteristic in my view.

Anybody who is narrow-minded and sanctimonious enough to suggest profanity is on a par with racism is displaying an idiotic characteristic in my view. The moment you said that, your views became moot.

What might offend you or me might not offend someone else. To suppose gender differential In regards to swearing is well... Sexist.. Sexiam should have no place on this board IN MY OPINION.. Do you see? You're never going to attain unanimity And please everyone

If the forum rules allow offensive language, but don't allow a bloke acting the fool in a non offensive manner, then the rules need ameding.

Can we sort this via a tug-o-war outside the Gas club?
Nick might volunteer to be spliced into the dead centre of the rope to add a little sparkle to the contest?

Do you not believe the admins when they say that they've given Nick enough rope over the years? There are 4 pages of largely rational posts from both sides of the argument. The fact that they suspect he has another account which he uses to post rationally, suggests he knew his village idiot account would get blocked at some point. If this is true, it does make me wonder why someone of his age (if my memory serves) would continue to act like that for so long? If you were an admin, wouldn't your patience run thin eventually, knowing his sole aim was to get a rise out of folk and a rise out of the admins. I don't see myself as a killjoy, I just like reading sensible and legible posts, with all the humour, irony, hypocrisy and acrimony that's posted in context. I wonder how many times Nick has read this particular thread and at what point he'll print it out for framing?

I seriously cannot grasp what Nick has done wrong, no matter how many times he’s been warned. Life’s hard. It’s good to be able to have a coffee break, catch up on DATM and feel a smile forming whilst reading the latest offerings from Nick.

I get that Overton - but try and stick yourself in the shoes of an admin who is trying to keep this place tidy, balanced, not have it shut down for legal reasons etc. etc. I know I keep on banging the drums for the admins, but I don't think people appreciate what they do. They also acknowledge they don't get everything right either, but then again you or I don't pay them to get everything right either.
We all enjoy what you've described, if you enjoy Nick's nonsense then the only pragmatic outcome that I can see if it were possible & wouldn't require an admin overhead or a regular watch on things, would be to have a Nick nonsense board, where permissions could confine Nick to that sub-board alone. But that would no doubt be met with cries of discrimination.
You & I are lucky. We can come on here, read bit, post a bit, laugh a bit, then get on with real life without worrying about having to respond to admin queries and make sure threads aren't getting out of hand, borderline litigious, libellous etc.
At the end of the day, how many others have posted the 95% nonsense that Nick posted?

That's a valid argument and to be honest I wouldn't have banned him and I haven't reported him BUT BUT BUT If I had been dropping the C bomb for 10 years and been asked politely to stop using it 100s of times over that period, but persisted despite advice and instruction with threat of permanent ban. And then got banned for it.. I would have to, on reflection, conclude that maybe I should have stopped dropping the C bomb I don't think it's too fanciful to conclude that Nick may have wanted banning such was his blatant disregard for years of advice

So, Sir Nick of Hommfirth has gone, forever. He will be remembered. My God, he will be remembered! It's all a really. He was/is clearly a comedy guy. Some got the joke. Some didn't. Some got the joke but occasionally got pissed off with him (me!) I just don't like losing characters. We've lost plenty of characters over the years and this place is undoubtedly a more fun and interesting forum with a whole range of diverse posters. Personally, I'm going to miss him. Already my number of 'likes' has been drastically reduced...

Any poster that repeatedly used the C word would be banned on the card system for me. I guess my point is that I am far more tolerant of somebody acting daft, than people who use foul language. I'd hope most people feel the same way, yet the forum rules don't reflect that.

I can honestly see both sides of the argument and you make some good points. However, surely when considering legal issues on a website forum, DATM is more at risk from people who post genuine abusive messages and use foul language than from a character who misspelled someones name. I have frequently been horrified at the responses sent to Nick by various posters in response to one of his harmless jokey messages. Can’t help feeling sorry for him and think the forum is worse off without him.
