All Both Gag_N_Bone_Man (Destabiliser) and myself have a proposal to put to you with regards to Off Topic generally, but primarily the Politics and Current Affairs thread. Please take time to read this and give us your opinion by voting in the poll. We will then act upon the result. You have a week to vote and this poll will be locked at 1800hrs on Monday 6 July 2020. This board belongs to you the fans, although it is our task to maintain some sort of order. A number of years ago the administration team decided to draw up a set of rules in order to prevent unpleasantness on the site and these are detailed in DATM Forum Rules, in the thread Forum Rules and Admin Issues. At the time this made sense as the aim was to make the main board, Talk of the Town a better environment for all users. This has worked pretty well although quite often as admins we have to make judgement calls on rule breakers... I'm sure you will appreciate nothing is ever quite as clear cut as it seems when it comes to adjudicating reported posts. However, we feel that the polarised political debate in the Politics and Current Affairs thread quite often leads to nastiness and general disharmony that can spill over onto the main board. This is unfortunate because we are all supporters of Huddersfield Town with a common interest at heart. The problem we have as administrators is trying to enforce rules that were originally designed for the main board, in a thread where posters are on the extremes of the political divide, and where tempers can often get frayed. What to one person might be free speech is to another hate speech. Incidentally, if anyone has time on their hands it might be interesting to have a look at other fansites to see how many of the 92 clubs allow politics on their boards. From the ones I've visited it's not many and for those that do the conversation is not as vitriolic as ours. Nevertheless, we don't want to throw the baby out with the bath water and to close the whole of Off Topic might be too severe - there are some great threads on there. Therefore the three proposals are: 1. Closedown the Politics and Current Affairs thread. 2. Closedown Off Topic. 3. Make no changes to the site. Regards G and Kenny.

Close the politics down, if people want to chat about that then there are other forums for that.

Despite being a contributor to the politics board. And at times a part of the problem I think, I feel we should bin it. It causes nothing but rancour and no one has ever changed their mind I'm sure as a result of reading it. The issue then becomes what is politics and what isnt, the covid thread immediately springing to mind

We could always bring Marcus back to reinvigorate it. I'm only kidding. I vote close the Politics board.

There’s a risk that political and current affairs threads will just start up on off topic if the p&ca board is closed, so it’d need strong administration to make sure that didn’t happen.

Off Topic is a great read. Some top contributions from some top posters. Politics can be a horrible read, some real nastiness and would not be missed in the slightest.

Bin any talk of politics

Great to see so much thought been put into the site by the Admins. I agree - keep off topic , bin the Politics. Some great threads and posters who regularly contribute to off topic , which has been particularly entertaining during lockdown.

Everybody needs to grow a pair!
Nothing wrong with polarised debate on any of the boards.

Tbf the off topic board needs to be merged with the main board.
The best club football forum I've seen is the Brighton one because of the variety of topics.
Just talking football particularly at the moment as a Town fan is dull and depressing.

What does closing the sub forum do? It'll just go to the off topic section. Just like the move of a load of posts to the archive section it's a change for change's sake.
If you're saying there can be no talk apart from football then that's stupid IMO. COVID has been the biggest event of some (most?) of our lifetimes, why can't there be somewhere to talk about it?
If people don't like the forum they don't have to go there. That was the point in creating it in the first place. I don't see why those of us who want to post and talk about stuff there can't do so.

Keep things as they are please. The politics can be infuriating but there is also a lot of stuff that I find quite informative.
Off Topic is not quite what it was but it is still fun and actually a little bit more inclusive than the main board. For eg there are rarely, if ever, any bust-ups on music threads.

I hope the Politics does go. Just an idea for those like minded folk who appear to thrive on it why not create a chat room so they can talk about what they wish to their hearts content . I like Offtopic and if it is all closed down then like Mids I am away altogether. Its not surprising how many regular and long time posters already have departed.

If there's more than 10 regular posters on there I'd be surprised. Leave it as it is, it keeps the political stuff away from the football stuff and harmless Off Topic threads. The admins have done a good job of letting threads on the main board run their course before shifting them. I thought they'd moved the Covid thread off the main board a bit too soon at the time but, on reflection, it was the right call.

I spend a fair bit of time on the Politics and Current Affairs section and must say I quite like it. If you don't, don't go on there.
Things can get heated at times but it's very rare for any comments to get under my skin. I personally don't see that heat as a problem (although I acknowledge that possibly means I'm part of the problem - if I am, please call me out on it).
Off Topic tends not to get heated at all and I've discovered a few new (to me) artists and musicians through there.
It gives us something other than football to talk about, for those of us who want to. I vote it stays.
(Seriously though - I've never been censured by admins so I think I'm ok, but if I am ever out of line I have no issue with being called out).

I've steered clear more recently & would hope I can stay away for a little longer.
Maybe someone should sponsor folk to not post on there...
In general though, let it ride. It's more toxic just now due to lockdown and little else to do (sort of), but once we see some semblance of normal life return it'll probably revert back to normal as well. It will always be controversial, that's just the nature of it...

I never knew there was a politics board, now I know there is get rid of it,I'd imagine there's some right Bellends on it That's a shame that you think that. The committee had planned to use our monthly social to invite recognised sporting champions to come in and do a Piers Morgan style life stories. Oti, Ted and Slapps would take it in turns to host & our first one post lockdown had considered asking the DATM World bowls champion to grace us with their presence. We might have to bring forward the "audience with the bloke who invented the growler in a flask" event...

Isnt the easy solution that if you dont like the politics board.. dont go on it!
Having done it once a long time ago, I didnt like pot holing. I don't need pot holing to be banned though, so those that do like it can't do it. I have the option to not go pot holing!
Besides for all the polar opposite views and rowing, having read a lot of the crap on the main board recently, the politics board is the best bit of DATM at the moment.

So you hope the bits you like to go on stay, but you hope the bits you dont like to go on, go? Thats very magnanimous of you. The politics board IS like a chat room where like minded folk can chat to their hearts content. Thats what it is! You dont have to go on. You have that choice.

The issue then becomes what is politics and what isnt, the covid thread immediately springing to mind FTR, there are quite a few threads on there that have altered my perception and aided my understanding of certain issues. Perhaps we could all do a better job of acknowledging when that happens rather than focusing on the bits where we disagree. I include myself in the "could do better" camp btw. Also FTR - I don't think you're "part of the problem". I don't deny that sometimes I find you frustrating but on the whole I think you add a lot of value to the discussions.

My thoughts exactly Debate should never be an issue - infact it should be encouraged - but where the Politics board lets itself down is when it gets personal. At the end of the day people (myself included) need to remember no one wants our society or country to be a mess. Everyone wants it to the best place it can but we have different views on what that looks like Like you I've altered my perspective on certain topics when people with opposing views have made counter comments and I can't see a fault in their logic Peronally, rather than debating in an echo chamber of people with the same views we should accept DATM for it is - a cross section of society - yes that can cause heated debate (especially among Yorkshire folk) when people discover others see things in polar opposite to them and their mates but as long as it's not personal I think it's a healthy part of free thinking and speech
