...was the last season that we finished with a positive goal difference. Seven stultifyingly bad years since, and there was also 2016/17 but even then we only ever won games by the odd goal; I well remember DW constantly fielding questions from Oggy about not scoring enough. And this year we have 18-goal Grant but no other bugger able to back him up. Can't score, can't defend...

Oh for a goalscorer in the Rhodes mould partnered by a workhorse in the Novak mould.

It’s crazy to think that we’re fresh out of the Premier League but yet I still look at some of those players who played around that time for us and think they’d do a better job than what we have now:
Rhodes, Pilkington (season before I know) and Danny Ward can’t get regular game time at their current clubs yet would all add more to our squad now - a sad reflection of where we are as club considering 2 years in the Big Time.

I don't quite get the obsession with goal difference. Was anyone really bothered we had a negative goal difference the year we got promoted, other than those intent on sticking the boot into Wagner at any opportunity?

Who gave a stuff about this the year we went up to the Premier League? When we were stood in the pouring rain in St George’s Square to welcome back the team, were any of us seriously bothered about negative goal difference?

Not showing up to important, winnable games may, however.

Not showing up to important, winnable games may, however. Exactly. It may get so tight that goal differece comes into the equation, but if we do go down it'll mainly be because we failed to turn up in so many important games. Had we performed as we should goal difference wouldn't matter. We seem to have become a little obsessed with goal difference at this club - ever since we got promoted with a minus goal difference. Personally, I give more credence to wins and points on the board.

Win 30 games 1-0, lose all the other 16 games 4-0.
Net result, promotion with a -34 GD... (most likely)
The point is that it's ideal to have balance or being reasonable at both attacking and defending, as opposed to being over reliant on one or the other.
The problem for me is our lack of pace and intent in attack. The game seems to favour those teams just now.
Our minds are shot though, which never helps...

Our goal difference is almost exactly the same as our set piece record (excluding penalties). I think that's worth mentioning!
