Have had a number of Town videos copied onto DVD this way.

Plenty of little shops doing it now up and down though. You may be able to get a special deal somewhere.

I was thinking of having some of my old VHS tapes transferred to DVD

It's just like watching a VHS I'm afraid. So the quality stays the same, doesn't improve, but also doesn't deteriorate? Correct. Copying it onto DVD doesn't improve or degrade the quality. The quality you get on the VHS is the quality you get on the DVD.

About 5 years ago, I found an old bit of cine tape and a bloke in Brighouse put it onto a DVD. I suspected it had something to do with my Dad, who died really young when I was only 5.
It was my brother's first holy communion and I was about 3. It was brilliant and emotional in equal measures. When we showed it to my Mum who has double dementia, she could tell us all about the day. A tiny glimpse of the past.

I had some family VHS videos converted to DVDs recently. Pretty sure it was £5 per tape I had about 20 done. Had them collected and it took about a week. Can find the details if anyone's interested

Have a portable V.H.S television I am slinging, for free if interested. I remember 3 formats. VHS which took off, Betamax that partially took off and the relatively unknown V2000 that never got going. Guess which we had?

And the readily acknowledged best quality picture of them all was Betamax, of which I had two Sony players in the late 1980s.

Betamax miles better but not as good at ‘selling itself’. Quality loses again over clever marketing.

If I remember correctly, not always the case, Betamax players were a bit more expensive than VHS, so I think that drove the trend to VHS. I owned both systems and Betamax was a lot higher quality.

The video player wars is used on lots of marketing modules in FE/Uni.
