In that first video it looks very much like fireworks flashing as they ignite.

In that first video it looks very much like fireworks flashing as they ignite. Those are definitely fireworks but no way can fireworks cause an explosion like that. So there must have been something else very close by which was ignited

If this in indeed a political or religious act of terror then I fear for tensions in that area -sad day. It is such a shame that Lebanon just cannot progress peacefully and without corruption; I've had some incredible times in the city and the country and have a lot of respect for their culture (well, most of it).

Most of the talk is of a tragic accident, rather than an act of terror.
However, it may well be that a small fire in, say, a fireworks warehouse ignited a munitions store.
Although, the subsequent mushroom cloud could only mean - according to our regular crackpot, Pixie - a nuclear bomb.
(Newer readers may have to search for that reference, somewhere between the cancer cures and lizardoid rulers).

Looks like a container of fireworks went up, igniting some years old (2700 tons) of Ammonium Nitrate stored in a nearby warehouse. Horrendous.

Shocking footage. Made me think of this one. My brother mentioned this a few yrs back when we met him for lunch when stopping at St Georges Park. We had lunch at the nearby pub that was largely demolished by the blast in 1944. The article refers to it as the Hanbury crater, my brother called it the Fauld crater. It's still fenced off now... en.wikipedia.org/wiki/RAF_Fauld_explosion

What has been amazing is to see the footage from people close to the scene - they must have survived to be able to upload it but how? Terrifying power - reportedly registered 3.5 on the richter scale and rattled the windows 250km away.
It appears to have been an accident but f--- knows.

Ammonium nitrate is very explosive if packed into a small space and can get unstable when left for a long time or handled incorrectly. If it's been stored for years in large quantities next to explosives such as fireworks then it's a disaster waiting to happen. A fire in the fireworks part could set off the ammonium nitrate once it got hot enough. This is total speculation and obviously they need to do a huge investigation.

Ammonium nitrate explosion 27000 tonnes, in this country storage is limited to 25 tonnes without being a nms storage site ( under strict storage rules) and no way would we allow fireworks to be stored anywhere near. Most places allowed are in farms in the middle of fields little danger. We all mock health and safety in this country and in a lot of cases itâs Ott, but wow we are streets ahead in other ways. This is a disaster which could easily have been avoided with the slightest bit of commonsence . Horrendous and most of felt like they had been attacked .

It sounds like the ammonium nitrate was confiscated from a terror group with some of it being illegally stored in ice in a warehouse in London, so even though my above post is correct if terrorists or criminals store this stuff without the authorities knowing this could of happened here.

'The explosion came amid ongoing tensions between Israel and the Hezbollah military group on Lebanon's southern border. Many residents reported hearing planes overhead just before the blast, fueling rumors of an attack, though Israeli military overflights are common. An Israeli government official said Israel âhad nothing to doâ with the blast. He spoke on condition of anonymity because he was not authorized to discuss the matter with the news media. Israeli officials usually do not comment on âforeign reports.â ' www.foxnews.com/politics/trump-lebanese-explosion-bomb-attack

Thousands of tons of potentially explosive materials all across ex conflict zones. This one burned for a while before reaching the required temperature for it to be made unstable. Question might be more why did a decent size fire burn for this amount of time? The storage of these materials is as stated, across the region and given there is no such thing as health and safety regs the disaster was when not if..? I like the premiers hard talk about making the perpetrators pay??? From what I was told this material and others in this area have been moved , sold and re stocked regularly by the governments of the time and therefore by him and his??? Stand by for some token retribution..

This has burnt for some time to reach required temperature to make this chemical unstable... Failing the evidence, it was the Jews, will probably do for some??

I know that media sources are often not spot on, but itâs all over media channels bbc etc hardly experts just relaying whatâs on the news, and how the hell do you know what others do for a living, Simone could be telling you information about a fertiliser because they work with the stuff so have more knowledge than joe blogs and happily pass it on you miserable sod.

I'm on over 30 years working in laboratories and didn't claim to be an expert, how about you? This will be my final post on the thread, I've said there's a massive investigation to be done so I'll let them get on with it.
