I don't think anyone is excited by this deal but equally I'm not as upset as many Keogh is only playing League One because of his actions at the start of last season. His Derby contract - seemingly £24k per week - wasn't set to expire until this summer (June 2021) - www.theguardian.com/football/2019/oct/30/derby-sack-richard-keogh-car-crash-reduced-wagesAt MK Dons he's proven he's over his injury and is match fit As a player he's Championship quality - winning numerous player of the season awards at Coventry and Derby, making the Championship Team of the Year. I'm very surprised by the fee quoted though. I assume it's a down payment with add ons if we stay up and he plays a certain number of games? Love your positivity fairplay to you for still having hope but for me its an absolute pathetic signing, not only does he come with serious question marks over the way he acted as an experienced pro at Derby but also the fact he's 34 has a crooked Knee and will have zero resale value. It completely destroys this policy of signing youth and selling players on for higher market value which I would be ok with if it was anybody actually decent not a washed up centre back who has done 'ok' in League one.

It looks like even back then they were trying any way to trim their wage bill. We need players like this in order to provide on the field experience for Edmonds-Green and Critchlow in order for them to progress.

I suppose my take on this is what's the point of spending £250k now and then needing to spend again in the summer? Why not look at a 24/25 year old in League one that we think would be a better option that REG or Critchlow and pay £1m for them?
It smacks of a panic buy and a lack of foresight. My fear is this will be used as an excuse not to spend later when we need to.

I can see the logic of this to a certain extent, and I’m certainly not in the habit of throwing my toys out of the pram before a prospective signing even kicks a ball, but there’s a fair bit that’s worrying about it too:
1. We seem to be kicking the can down the road once again. Yes, Stearman most certainly contributed for the first 10 months of his 18 month contract, but he is now injured and we don’t know how he’ll recover, if he’ll ever play a significant role again. We only got a few weeks out of Elphick - of course I feel bad for him, but we’ve been carrying his not insignificant wages for 16 months now. When you sign a player well into their 30s, you’re getting experience, sure, but you’re also getting a player more likely to get injured and one who takes longer to recover from any injury. Let’s put it like this: Keogh is more likely to suffer a soft tissue injury, grade 1 or 2, in the first weeks of double training sessions under CC than a 25 year old. A part of why we’re in the midst of an injury crisis in this position is BECAUSE we keep making this same type of signing. When are we going to break the cycle? So far we’ve received a little over 11 months service for 30 months wages (combined Elphick and Stearman) and there’s no guarantee that Keogh will significantly improve that ratio. Would we have seen better value shelling out a fee for a 23-29 year old defender 18 months ago? Again, no guarantees, but we’d likely have seen a higher pitch time to wages ratio. This short-termism has been proved to not only hurt us long-term, but also medium and even short-term.
2. It is concerning that when confronted with the current injury situation, Keogh’s name is the one that cropped up. I’m not saying he’s poor, or past it, but it strikes me as an emergency signing. And there’s no reasonable reason why we should be making an emergency signing right now, and particularly in this position. WE KNEW about the injuries to Schindler, Stearman and Elphick coming into January and for several weeks besides. And WE KNEW that the fact our entire first team had been playing in the ‘red zone’ for several weeks was likely to result in further injuries. We have also known for a long time that we are losing 3 senior centre backs at the end of the year. It would be worrying in the extreme if we didn’t have a list of centre back targets for the summer - say 4 shortlisted, another dozen long listed - and that efforts hadn’t been made to see if we could expedite such a signing in January. The financial decision to be weighed up would not be overall cost of ‘X’ vs cost of Keogh, but additional cost of buying ‘X’ in January vs overall cost of Keogh. That’s without factoring in my first point about short-termism.
If he does come, I of course hope that he’s a success. And the situation is clearly complicated somewhat by our desire to see how far REG and RC can go. But I certainly understand the frustrations of those who see us signing a 34yo centre back at a time we’re already paying out up to £50k a week for three injured 30-something centre backs as a bit of an unnecessarily desperate move.

Could have saved myself half an hour if I’d hung in for a few minutes....

I reckon he’s already signed but the comms team daren’t announce it. I can only imagine the comments on Twitter to the Terrier Incoming. Maybe Phil should stay off the internet for a while.

The internet will be meltdown with this announcement, maybe it's a double announcement of him and Diddy Duane Holmes.

Wonder what it feels like as a supporter , to read transfer speculation about your club and to be genuinely excited about the prospect of signing a particular player? It’s a long time since this happened to me.

Age always has an impact on the severity of the injury and the recovery time. Also, these contact injuries happen disproportionately to older players, which suggests that factors such as flexibility and reaction times have an impact also.

The current situation is crying out for smart use of loans yet we don’t seem to want to go down that route. Doesn’t make any sense to me.
