I suspect that one of the things that helped me understand Scottish dialect as I was growing up and then working with many of them, was the fact that my parents always bought a copy of the Sunday Post every week. It was the cartoons section which was heavily patriotic, Oor Willie and also the Broons... I got the impression that the former was their version of Dennis the Menace... Which was obviously written and printed up there, was it Dundee where DC Thomson was/is? The Broons and Oor Wullie are part of the DC Thomson stables, I’ve actually got a hardback book - 1946/1956 The Golden Years, selection of comic strips from The Sunday Post, the intro states By the end of WW2 they were family favourites.....thanks to artist Dudley D Watkins and weekly appearances in the Post. I’d no idea they went that far back, if you’ve fond memories the book (RRP £8.25) was a couple of quid from The Works the other year, as for DCT they are based in Dundee (although this book refers to a Fleet Street address) I recall 45 years ago writing to them to join the Dennis The Menace Fan Club and getting a membership card and wallet and a couple of badges - it all came flooding back a few years ago when I drove past the building to do a delivery close by.

It also triggered a reminder that we used to do some work for them back in the day, on their LAN. I think the people involved in the account always enjoyed their visits as the main man back then was a real nice bloke. I seem to recall him being referred to as Mr Alsitair or something. A quirky old business by the sounds... en.wikipedia.org/wiki/DC_ThomsonTunnock's are another family owned firm. I drove past their factory a few years ago when I spent some time working up there. Sent the pics of the factory frontage back to the family who thought I was mad. Can't beat a Tunnock's...

Street cred for Dennis the Menace, I'll take that, the Gnasher badge was a thing of beauty at the time, circular with black fur around (stop it!) and googly eyes.
Apart from Blockbuster Video and keeping on track for DATM, the Town Travel Club, I've not had many other club memberships with ID cards - I've still got the Town one from 79/80 season, Membership No. 1 - Beat that.

( Sorry Oti, I’m sure in reality you had a cravat and a Pug called Prometheus. X)

Yes, great times,, I remember my class doing the Friday assembly, and practising a new song obviously written by one of the teachers and projected on to a screen for the rest of the school to join in,, as it was everywhere I would imagine,
With a piano and guitar accompaniment it definitely went " when the lights are at red, we don't want to be dead, So we stop because its right " sadly I cannot remember the rest.
Tufty, Charlie says and the Wombles were proper role models, I can also remember some older kids being LDVs, Litter defence Volunterers and walking around with armbands on waiting to call someone a litterbug.

Not a club as such but I used to save up the Bazooka Joe vouchers and send off for their stuff. I cannot remember any of it so it must have been shit. I also enrolled on a by post stamp collecting thing, which I’ve never admitted to anybody else before. The only other club had a bit more street cred - the 2 Tone Fan Club!

Another kid’s membership I recall is the “Man from Uncle” club. Your membership pack included: Fake ID Note Book Pencil Plastic Handcuffs Map showing the whereabouts of “Thrush” agents.
My grandad enrolled me and my brother who started crying when he told him he might have to go away on a mission.

Twas the mid/late 70s so I would imagine Mr Ratcliffe fancied himself as a bit of a Clapton always sneaking a funky bit of guitar chords in while we would all try and sing the school songs a bit plastic bertrandy or Gordon is a morony, Bit harder to get away with while singing morning has broken.
