Without any doubt the situation is causing far more of our problems than any other. Its causing the shocking defensive errors, the panicing, the bad passing, the utter drain in confidence we've seen since before Christmas. Getting rid of Hamer was an absolute disaster that the club are going to pay for big style. Something I can't actually believe I've just typed. 😂 Reminiscing about Ben Hamer, we're through the looking glass here. You're right though.

The lads confidence is shot. High balls just terrify him. Then he flaps around like a baby giraffe. No physical presence, no situational awareness. He should have claimed that corner that led to the goal, instead he ends dumped on his arse inside the goal with a crying face...

If we all know he his not good enough, so will the opposition. I would imagine that who ever we are playing just tell their player's to make sure to get plenty of crosses in or win a corner and their keeper will flap around, and he will be worse when the fan's are back in the ground getting on his back. Personally i don't think it is something you can coach in to a keeper, it should come naturally and of course the defence will be a bag of nerves with a keeper who cant come out for crosses and a decent keeper would be top of my list of player's to sign every time. Mind you, the lads nerve's will be shot to bit's with this present set of defender's in front of him but to be fair with our injury list thing's can only get better!!.

Seeing Pereira on the bench does not give me much confidence that Leutwiler is the answer either.

How surprisingly odd and comforting is it to see two team line ups represented in a 442 graphic ?!

Let’s be honest, we don’t have a single keeper on the books up to the job. This should have been rectified LAST summer at least, we all knew Hamer wasn’t the answer either. Absolutely rankles with me that we’re in this position all these months later but it’s so typical as to how the recruitment has operated for far too long. Simply not good enough along with many other things.

It obvious but I’ll say it anyway. We just need a solid, reliable keeper. We have not had a keeper that you know just does the job since Bennett and we haven’t had a top drawer keeper since Vaesen. I was not a huge Smithies fan before anyone says....

His decision making has improved.... his command of the penalty area is really an issue. I doubt we could afford to buy a better keeper than schofield to be fair and he's getting better every week.

I can't remember a shot just going through him like it did with lossl and ward pretty much every time most recently...... he's made some outstanding saves behind a terrible defence. His shots topping is definitely up there. Other aspects of his game are improving. He has made a few mistakes, distribution, command of his area etc. But I reckon he has saved more than the has given away. Ward didn't make mistakes or great saves and lossl made less mistakes and less great saves. I'd be happy with schofield next season.

He reminds me of Phil Senior. Very decent shot stopper, shit at most other things. Distribution isn't great either. This day and age, a keeper needs to be decent with the ball on the deck as the games adapting. Schofield can't judge when a players closing him down. If he's number 1 next season or we haven't at least a very good keeper along with him, then we can expect the same mistakes as this.

While not a massive fan of his presence in the box (a summer in the gym is desperately needed), 3 clean sheets and 3 goals conceded in his last 6 games isn’t anything to scoff at.
Whether it’s a change in style to grind out 0-0 or snatch and grab results, I don’t know, but in those games we have only scored 4.

What I missed on my post was ‘a solid, reliable keeper that you know just does the job for the standard we are at’. Lossl was ok. I liked him. His kicking and passing out from the back however made me really nervous. When you have Premier League standard strikers bearing down on you and all you need to do is pump it upfield, it generally ended up a dodgy pass to Schindler or a mis kick out for a throw. For the standard, he was average. In my opinion.

We are too cynical about our keepers . Since Vaesen, Id go as far as to say we’ve been relatively lucky with keepers:
Margetson, Smithies, Bennett, Steer, Ward, Lossl all been solid enough for the level we are at ... maybe even throw Glennon if we are being honest .
Only real calamity keepers we’ve stuck with were Scott Bevan, Paul Rachubka and first season Hamer

I still don't understand how people don't rate Lossl. He pulled off some amazing saves, was happy dealing with high balls and was fantastic with his feet.
In fact being so good with his feet ended up going against him as we asked him to do it more and more, and eventually the odd one isn't going to come off.
He was a very good, rounded goalkeeper.

Crazy, isn't it? Ever present (I think) in the best team we've had for forty years, and arguably, given the standard of the PL, ever.

Matt Glennon summed Lossl up perfectly. “He has presence” Watching our current incumbent yesterday, scared to death of coming off his line, I’d say he certainly hasn’t.

Best keeper that sticks in my head is Stevie Harper Can't think of anyone stand out since Think he made his debut at West Brom in a 2-0 win in the fog, i agree a very good keeper and well liked by the fans, another `Steve` who i rated was Steve Francis, great servant for town with 186 apps under his belt!
