Sensible move to sort quickly after the Leeds media pantomime
Very quickly would have had 18m left on contract inc year option
This helps preserve his value
If the release clause set at a suitably high level & a club meet it then fair enough
Plenty time for us to line up his replacements for when that does happen

That bit where Corboran ( and Hodgkinson before him ) talk about what a brilliant professional Obrien is.. great attitude,, great to work with, 100%er constantly.
Basically the opposite of that waste of space Simpson we blew a load of money on, who looked more like a conference north player than a championship one after his first couple of games,
then still expected a shed load of extra money to stay on for the few weeks the season had been extended due to covid, and now seemingly gets all bitchy because the club told him to do one.

Release Clause figures have to be paid in full to be activated so £12m could be about right. The £13m with Leeds wasn’t guaranteed so who knows what they actually offered upfront |

I am not a Simpson fan but he did make a big difference to our back 4 when he first arrived. He was a steady full back and our back 4 started taking on a much better shape just because he nailed down his position and gave our central defence less to worry about. Just remember what we had in place before him. Unfortunately for us he just started getting worse as the season wore on and in the end he was not any better than what we did have in his position before he arrived. |

Maybe first couple of games is an exaggeration? But not by much. Ill give him 4 or 5 games before he was a liability more than an asset on reflection. And a liability was what he quickly became.. woefully slow, easy to get past and prone to blunders. A big criticism of the Cowleys was not realising they had a much better option all along in Chalabah sat there not doing anything. The change was forced on them in the end and its a good job too as it might have made the difference that kept us up. Another criticism is wanting him to stay on for that extension to the season, never mind offering him a big signing on fee to do it. |
