Lincoln away was when I knew we had a great chance of promotion. They had won all their home games and had just beaten Bournemouth 9(nine) 0. Both teams had played the day before in a busy Christmas fixture list. Despite going 1-0 down to a cracking Glenn Cockrill (sp.?) goal, we went on to win 2-1.

Another big away support, we went in a mini bus that got attacked in a traffic jam near the ground.. The Sheff Utd game with one of them up the flood lights Millwall at Home on match of the day and 5-1 win..

The home game in November against Bristol Rovers springs to mind. After a slow start we had won 6 on the bounce but Bristol were expected to be a tough test . We demolished them and i remember people in and around the directors box looking at each other and commenting that this could be the year

Absolutely brilliant win. Away days were just normally with my old man, but the old gal went with us that day for some reason, probably with it being the holiday period (she never missed a home game and booked holidays around the football)

I have never been so squeezed in before or since. Anyone who doubts that can look up their crowds that season, it was double their average.

I can clearly remember getting in the boot of my Dads mates estate car along with 2 other lads, 5 blokes in the front and setting off about 9 in the morning to go to Bristol Rovers, We were there in plenty of time and am pretty sure I had an hour playing Footy with a load of other folk on large patch of grass outside the stadium for an hour or so before the game.
I also recall having to ask my Dads pals etc to open the windows in the car as we couldn't breathe in the back with 5 blokes smoking in the front.
Newport at home I am pretty sure I watched the whole game sat on the roof of the St Johns dugout under the cowshed/terrace, brilliant days.

We all got free entry into the ground, but it was a wet day and the referee decided that we’d make a mess of the goal areas and refused to let us do it. Ended up finally getting our chance at half-time in the Bournemouth game, later in the season.

Was it that season we won away at Chesterfield? 0-1 I think, Lillis header.
I remember being in the cowshed when Cowling scored against Newport. A great moment.

Remember watching the second half from the Cowshed after the ref fucked us off, we were sat in the stand up til that point.

Belle Vue, Donny Rovers happened more than once, I think it was 79/80 the police decided enough was enough and assured Town fans “No more !” - of course that simply ensured that they will go again and they duly did. Not big, not clever just different times.

I recall the red top papers on Saturday morning saying an army of 2,000 was coming from South Wales, in the end it was nearer to 200 as I remember.

Some great results but, just as when we had that 101 goals season in Division Four, as far as I was concerned 'the gloss was taken off' those achievements as I was still finding it hard to accept that we had become a 'lower division club'. Convincingly beating Newport, Halifax, Bradford etc seemed difficult to take much pride in. With perspective I now appreciate that Mick Buxton did a brilliant job, and his teams often played some very entertaining football. A pity I was too 'unhinged' by our fall from grace to properly enjoy it.

1983 wasn’t just a great season, it was a great year. A fantastic Town team- and don’t forget, this continued into 83-84.
Started work, went to dozens of gigs, had just enough money in me pocket to pay for what I needed. Tetleys still tasted like Tetleys should.
Remember ending up on the floor in the Cowshed after those late goals v Bristol Rovers.
New year’s day v Bradford.
Singing “Stick your home record up your arse” as we were the first team to win at Lincoln.
Realising defeat at Bristol Rovers wasn’t the end of the world.
Drinking 4 pints in about 15 minutes in The Swan with Two and staggering up Westgate for the train to Donny and a 4-0 win.
Apart from kids being born, probably the best year of my life.

My first proper season this and will always be my favourite.. Chelsea cup tie at Leeds Road had a pretty special atmosphere. Remember the Match of the Day v Millwall (feature game! no shirt sponsor allowed and we played sublime i thought we were best team in the world that weekend)

They gave us a round of applause when we were all on the pitch at the end. That was my first ever game as a 7 year old. It might be my mind playing tricks but I'm sure there were so few of them that you could probably have counted them quite easily. Might have been 100 or so in there? It seemed a poxy amount.

Great season. Lillis matured and was a beast....think Russell joined after the season started and he was a proper little terrier. Arsenal away when it was never a pen and we were the better team....the fans refusing to leave the stadium!! Chelsea at home, naughty....Chelsea away losing half my trousers in a scrap. 4-3 v Exeter.....Lillis diving header? Stanton FOUR....and the best of all getting in the ground at Altrincham away with a Stones beer mat as i did not have a ticket.
