Was it that season we won away at Chesterfield? 0-1 I think, Lillis header. I remember being in the cowshed when Cowling scored against Newport. A great moment. That Chesterfield game was one of my first away games. Seem to have some vague memory of a lot of fancy dress. Beating Leeds was great of course but for me the newport game is the one from that season. Promotion decider..Crammed in the cowshed, then Cowling scores the winner at that end with just a few minutes to go. Absolute mayhem! Went home with a big chunk of the pitch under my jacket. Sorry groundsman!

Strange that Newport game. They had a chance of promotion and the Examiner said they expected to bring 2000 fans. They actually brought about 200. They missed out on promotion and were non league about three years later.

I can still name Mark Kendall ex Spurs, John Aldridge and Tommy Tynan from that era, I think it was 88 they were relegated to the non league, went bust the following year. Now playing at Rodney Parade rather than Somerton Park, I had a regular delivery to a nearby builders merchant and got talking to a fan about that promotion season, apparently a few years earlier in the early 70βs they set two unwanted FL records, no wins in their first 25 games and a 6-1 defeat to then non league Barnet in the Cup.

I remember the Europe thing but I think it was the Cup Winners Cup not EUFA. That was definately the lowest ranking European competition back then. Only E gland and S Scotland took the up seriously. I remember they played Karl Zeiss Jena. They filled the ground I remember the crowd was 18,000 and it was on Sportsnight.

Was 9, back living in the UK for first time since 3 month old, first real memories of town, never been to a game and still couldn't, army sent us about as far from Hudds in UK you could get; Bulford Camp near Salisbury!
Dad's a L***s fan and also not a big footy watcher so no match commute possible but still loved being up to date on results after life in Germany with no English lower league interest, only matches ever been to was Dortmund games with German mate and his dad!
Four years later sent even further away to HK, bloody inconsiderate army bastards not thinking of my needs! And then back to Germany!
Then college in Chichester near Portsmouth, managed a few away games in Southend, Brighton, Portsmouth but only 1 home game; Sunderland in league cup when Gary Owners got sent off!
Consequently my first REAL season as a contributing fan was 93-94 so at least managed a Leeds Road season!
But 82-83 was the first year I got to keep up with the results and tables, actually knowing players' names as well lol

The home game in November against Bristol Rovers springs to mind. After a slow start we had won 6 on the bounce but Bristol were expected to be a tough test . We demolished them and i remember people in and around the directors box looking at each other and commenting that this could be the year Remember that game well. A wonderful game of football. Daryl Pugh played a blinder I seem to remember. Also, Lincoln away as mentioned. Never been in an away section as packed as that before or since.

Lincoln away was when I knew we had a great chance of promotion. They had won all their home games and had just beaten Bournemouth 9(nine) 0. Both teams had played the day before in a busy Christmas fixture list. Despite going 1-0 down to a cracking Glenn Cockrill (sp.?) goal, we went on to win 2-1. We were fekking packed in that day. Maybe 4500 in that tiny section under the floodlight.

Some of us started watching the game amongst the Lincoln fans, after arriving late, owing to, 'Just one more pint.' It got lively after Glenn Cockerill scored. We made a tactical advance to the Town end.

Sorry groundsman! I remember going to Chesterfield on the Special. It was my first season going to away games with mates and not my dad. I somewhat naively found myself in a group of around a dozen or so Town fans in the middle of the Chesterfield end. The first chant of 'Huddersfield' went up, the crowd parted around us, in marched the coppers and we were all escorted round the edge of the pitch and into the away end - to loud applause from the massed Town ranks. An odd experience for a gangly 16yo with zero pretentions of hard-man status. Other memories of that season: First away game on my own was to Deepdale on the Town coaches. We got a creditable 0-0 that day and I managed to get home unscathed. Leeds away in the League Cup. I've the vaguest of memories of getting the Special to Leeds, then been herded onto a fleet of Service Buses straight to Bellend Road. The Lowfields paddock was absolutely rammed that night and it went fucking mental when Cowling did the business. They kept us locked in for a while afterwards, but it didn't stop the bastards outside lobbing stuff over the wall at us - this was back before they built the cheese-wedge. Lincoln away was another ridiculously crammed terrace. The coach window smashed on the way home (can't remember whether accidentally or deliberately now) which made a long journey even longer. And colder! Bristol Rovers away. Disappointing result in front of masses of Town fans that day. Mainly memorable for the M5 grinding to a halt as loads of Town fans went straight over the tarmac to get at a load of Cardiff in the Southbound services on the opposite side. They'd won away at Chesterfield that day and were taunting us as we were both scrapping it out at the top that year.

I saw some great games that season. I missed the Bristol Rovers game because I'd had tickets to see Frank Marino at Birmingham Odeon for months (only Mosher will have heard of him) and asking a brummie newspaper vendor what was the result, he was bamboozled by the request.π

They'd won away at Chesterfield that day and were taunting us as we were both scrapping it out at the top that year. Further memoirs of a callow youth... Bournemouth at home. Poor game, 0-0 I think, but we finally got to do the penalty thingy at half time in front of a nearly 10,000 crowd. My dad had stopped going by this point, but turned up especially to see me on the pitch at half time. We lost, but I managed to score both my attempts and also saved a couple of theirs too. Bradford at home. Second half in the Cowshed was fucking awesome as Stanton went mental on the field. Wigan away. On the Special again, and a Police escort from the Station to Springfield Park. Town were poor that day and lost 2-0, that away end was treacherous on the grass/mud banking and they just opened the gates at the end to let us out en masse. That was one of the livelier walks back to the Station, with everyone scattered about and the locals trying to pick us off in small groups. Great fun to reminisce once back on the train, but bloody nervy in the Wigan backstreets with no sense of direction. Walsall away. Back on the Special again. West Mids Police were over zealous that day; no chanting in the escort, no ticker tape, no talking back to them. Town were poor again, another 2-0 defeat. There were a bunch of Town in the home end, with Gladstone's beret prominent amongst them. They were all invited to leave the premises, stood on an adjacent overpass for a while, then blagged their way into the away end by pleading 'confusion' to the old dear in the Walsall ticket office. There was a big FA Cup game that day, with Wolves away at Villa, and a Wolves Special pulled into the platform whilst the Coppers had us penned there waiting for our own train. There was quite a bit of 'banter' between us and Wolves until they pulled away again, with a few of theirs running the gauntlet after getting off. Wrexham at home. A group of us took our German exchange visitors to this night match. They got a bit confused when Wrexham opened the scoring, jumping up and down like we'd told them to when a goal went in! Anyway, funny looks aside, order was restored by Town in the second half. I still remember Leeds Road being described as a 'Super Stadium' by my Eric, much to my amusement. Bradford away. Nice pies, shit ground, a young Peter Jackson scoring for the Chickens, Town losing 3-1 and some unsuspecting Bradford fans being kicked off the Service Bus on the way home.

I vaguely remember being shepherded past a hotel and thr Aussie rugby league team were stood outside. The Hilton? Dunno Its a really vague memory. We were all chanting and these guys were stood outside. I d had a few and it was 40 years ago so its a but hazy. I do remember being in the Crown before going out for the train and Micky Kerrins telling me Boy George was a man on the TV ,I remember the goal though, fans climbing into the old Lowfields stand behind us, Leeds had some players from the great side of my childhood memories which was a bit weird, the electronic scoreboard in the Geldered end with the clock counting down so slowly, objects being chucked into that compound after. Great night.

Great memories there mate. Guessing you are a bit older than me as I was only 8/9 that season. German exchange kids - did you go to CVHS?

Loving these Jello, keep em coming
